NEW YORK MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG
Anyone who thinks that New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress might get the star treatment based on his celebrity and Super Bowl hero status over weekend illegal weapons charges better wake up. And that includes Burress himself.
Burress, of course, accidentally shot himself in the thigh this weekend. This may lead to illegal weapons charges against the Giants receiver. One need look no further than the statement made by New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to see how seriously authorities are taking the Burress case.
A “fuming” Bloomerg said Monday he wants Burress prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law.” Bloomberg railed that “our children” and “our police officers” are being killed on the streets of New York by illegal hand guns. Bloomberg is apparently willing to sacrifice a star New York Giant to make his point. He was instrumental in the state of New York passing tough anti-gun legislation that requires a MANDATORY minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison for anyone carrying an unlicensed illegal handgun. Since Burress didn’t have a New York permit, the gun that he shot himself with would be classified as illegal.
PLAXICO BURRESS WAS PLACED IN HANDCUFFS TODAY BY NEW YORK AUTHORITIES
Another indication of how serious the charges are is Burress’ hiring of Benjamin Brafman as his lawyer. Burress turned himself in to a Manhattan court today. He was initially handcuffed and could face between 3 1/2 and seven years in prison.
Bloomberg also chastized the New York Giants for not being “good corporate citizens” and calling authorities to report the Burress shooting. Bloomberg was also critical of the hospital that treated the Giants receiver for a gunshot wound and didn’t report it to police as required by law.
Burress was charged with two felony counts of possession of a weapon. He posted $100,000 bail.

Bloomberg needs to stop grand standing and shut up. What he should be saying is let’s wait for all the facts to come out.
What I’ve been hearing from people I know in the legal profession is that it’s unlikely he’ll go to prison and instead do community service, pay a hefty fine, etc. He doesn’t have a criminal record, etc.
