FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEAD AT 76

INGEMAR JOHANSSON KNOCKS DOWN FLOYD PATTERSON TO CAPTURE 1959 TITLE FIGHT

Onetime heavyweight boxing champion Ingemar Johansson died Friday. He was 76. Johansson was arguably the most famous (and beloved) athlete in the history of Sweden.

The Swede stunned Floyd Patterson with a dramtic TKO in 1959 to capture the heavyweight title. Johansson knocked Patterson down seven times in the third round of their 1959 fight at Yankee Stadium in New York. Patterson eventually came back and beat Johansson in each of the next two fights of their trilogy.
