CAIN VELASQUEZ: NEW UFC STAR IN THE MAKING?
Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin made his return to the top of a fight card a winning one Saturday night in Germany. Franklin defeated Wanderlai Silva in a unanimous decision at UFC 99. The card was held in Cologne, Germany and marked UFC’s return to Europe following previous matches in England and Ireland.
Meanwhile, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic made a successful return to UFC. Cro Cop had not been very impressive in his first incarnation with the UFC. Saturday he looked more like the international star he had been with the Japanese Pride organization. Cro Cop knocked out Mustapha Al-Turk in the first round.
Also on Saturday, former Arizona State University wrestler Cain Velasquez pounded out a unanimous decision over UFC veteran Cheick Kongo for a heavyweight victory. The UFC has been searching for an Hispanic star since Roger Huerta left the organization. Velasquez may fit the bill. He is now 4-0 in the UFC.
Mike Swick and Spencer Fisher were other winners on the UFC 99 card.
