Pity the poor New York Mets. Not only do they trail their crosstown rival Yankees with their performance on the field, but now they’re getting their ass kicked off the field as well.
The New York Times ran a hilarious piece over the weekend detailing the difference in shopping at the official New York Yankees store versus the Mets store on Black Friday. The Yankees Clubhouse store and the Mets Clubhouse are located just two blocks away from each other in midtown Manhattan. In terms of economic impact, they’re more like a million miles apart. The Times reports that whereas the Yankees store, with their team fresh off a 27th World Championship, was packed with shoppers paying $36 for Yankee hats and $130 for Jeter jerseys, the Mets store was virtually empty with row after row of discounted items marked “50 percent off.”
Perhaps most telling was the Mets debut of their new retro throwback jerseys. This season marks the 40th anniversary of the ’69 Miracle Mets winning the World Series. In honor of that event, the Mets uneiled their new home alternate jerseys at the Mets Clubhouse. The result? According to the Times,at last count, the Mets had sold exactly ZERO jerseys. In downtown New York. At the Mets official store. On the busiest shopping day of the year.
