Saying he’s “tired of embarrassing myself” golfer John Daly announced he’s “done” with professional golf. Daly made the announcement via a taped interview with The Golf Channel where he is currently filming the reality tv series “Being John Daly.” He missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open Friday after rounds of 79 and 71.
Last year, Daly played in only six PGA events, making the cut in three of those tournaments. His best finish was tied for 27th. For years, Daly, 43, has been a big hitter and fan favorite on the PGA Tour. Daly has won five tournaments, including two Majors (the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1996 British Open), despite having a disaster of a personal life where he has struggled through alcoholism, four marriages, obesity, gambling addiction, a chain smoking habit and several arrests.
Daly lost his tour card four years ago and has played mainly on sponsor exemptions. In 2008, golf coach and swing guru Butch Harmon dropped the beleagured Daly as a pupil saying he preferred “getting drunk” to golf.
