JOHN LEWIS QUESTIONED BY REPORTERS ABOUT RACIAL SLURS DIRECTED AT HIM SATURDAY
Angry over the possible passage of a health care bill, Tea Party members screamed the N-word at a pair of African-American congressmen in Washington D.C. Saturday. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia and Andre Carson of Indiana were subjected to taunts and racial slurs.
Lewis is a civil rights icon who marched and gave speeches with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s. He was famously beaten nearly to death by racist Alabama state troopers who fractured his skull in the “Bloody Sunday” incident in 1965.
Another congressman, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II of Missouri, was spit on by demonstrators Saturday. Meanwhile, a New York congresswoman had a brick thrown through her office window.
