Rampage Jackson escaped with a narrow decision over Lyoto Machida at UFC 123 in Detroit Saturday night. In fact, Jackson actually thought he had lost the decision. He even held up Machida’s hand in triumph following the fight. An angry UFC president Dana White got Jackson back in line after the surprising decision. Jackson’s new take: “When he dominated me so much in the third round, I forgot what happened in the first two rounds.” Two of the judges had given the first two rounds to Jackson and scored it 29-28 giving him a split decision. Several media organizations including ESPN.com, Sherdog and USA Today had scored the fight for Machida
In other action on the UFC 123 card, veteran champions Matt Hughes and B.J. Penn met for the third time. Penn, coming off two title losses to Frankie Edgar, knocked Hughes out in the first round.
