ACCUSED DUKE LACROSSE PLAYER OWES IRS $6.5 MILLION

February 25, 2011

Former Duke lacrosse player Reade Seligmann is NOT a rapist. He is, however, apparently a tax cheat. Seigmann was one of the Duke lacrosse players who was originally charged with rape but eventually exonerated after being accused by a stripper in a racially charged case that went to trial in 2007.

The Detroit News says Seligmann owes the IRS almost $6.5 million in back taxes. Seligmann’s lawyer said specifically the money is NOT owed from money earned in his settlement of a lawsuit from the case and is owed for the year 2007. According to an IRS expert interviewed by the paper, in order for Seligmann to owe that much money to the IRS, he would have to have earned at least $20 million dollars that year.

MMMM….BREAST MILK ICE CREAM

February 25, 2011

It’s the taste sensation that’s sweeping the nation in Great Britain. It’s ice cream made with human breast milk.

The London shop “Icecreamists” came up with the idea of what it is calling the ultimate organic food. They collected breast milk from 15 mothers who gave 10 ounces at a time. They mixed the breast milk with their usual ice cream recipes. Voila! The new flavor is called “Baby Gaga.

Icecreamers says the breast milk ice cream is “organic, free-range and totally natural.” The cost? Just $23 a cone.

MAN-BOOBED BARTOLO COLON TO START YANKEES SPRING OPENER

February 24, 2011

BARTOLO COLON

Who says the New York Yankees are “light” on starting pitching this spring?

With veteran retreads Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon looking to join C.C. Sabathia, the Yankees could have three 300-pounders in their rotation. That would make them the fattest starting rotation in MLB history.

No wonder Yankees GM Brian Cashman didn’t want reliever Rafael Soriano. He doesn’t weigh as much as one of Colon’s thighs. Colon has been picked to start New York’s first Spring Training game Saturday.

DEATH OF JOURNALISM: EXAMPLE # 4,326

YOU SAY GADHAFI I SAY KADAFI

Sure he’s bombed his own citizens, helped blow up airliners full of passengers and killed thousands but what about the problems crazed Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi is causing newspaper editors around the world?

Today’s Christian Science Monitor writes about the fact that there are no less than 112 accepted versions on how to spell Gadhafi’s name. After going through the rationale for at least half a dozen versions, writer Evan Vucci proclaims, “This is the point where most editors give up and run a story on Justin Bieber instead.”

BUZZ BISSINGER DOESN’T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE

February 23, 2011

BUZZ BISSINGER

For a guy who hates the Internet, acclaimed author Buzz Bissinger sure makes a lot of money writing an internet column. Bissinger now writes a sports column for The Daily Beast. That’s particularly hilarious considering Bissinger’s famous rant against internet sports coverage directed towards former Deadspin.com editor Will Leitch a couple years ago when the pair were on Costas Now on HBO.

Bissinger can’t even handle Twitter these days. There was a time when Bissinger wrote what is arguably the quitessential sports book. Now, according to critics, Bissinger “does not (even) care about sports anymore. The website “Can’t Stop The Bleeding” went so far as to call Bissinger’s last column on NBA All-Star Weekend “embarrassing.” Some might even argue the column is borderline racist.

Bissinger’s article, which is subheaded “White Men Can’t Root,” is one falsehood and stereotype after another. The general conclusion reached by Bissinger is that the NBA is “too black.” Bissinger even quotes a friend of his in the body of the freakin’ article as saying his conclusions tend towards being racist.

And that’s the problem. This article has nothing to do with the event he was assigned to cover-ostensibly NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. It’s impossible to tell even after reading the article whether Bissinger ever set foot in L.A. There’s not a single mention of any event associated with what has been provocatively called “Black Thanksgiving.” Instead of exploring his premise of the NBA being unwatchable to white people, Bissinger mails it in with a lame, half-ass effort.

Veteran basketball writer David Aldridge wrote a fantastic article about “Black Thanksgiving.” The piece explored the cultural aspects of the NBA and was a fantastic examination of the current state of hoops. Compare that to Bissinger who admits that he “almost never” watches the NBA anymore and only wrote about the topic because his editor MADE HIM. Disgusting.

CAM NEWTON SEES HIMSELF AS “AN ENTERTAINER AND ICON”

February 22, 2011

S.I.’s Peter King just Tweeted that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton sees himself as, “Not just a football player, but an entertainer and icon.”

Legendary former Dallas Cowboys front office executive Gil Brandt told Yahoo! Sports that Newton should be the number one pick in the entire NFL Draft. Meanwhile ESPN’s Mel Kiper has Newton as his highest rated quarterback.

YANKEES CALLED THE “TEABAGGERS OF MLB”

February 22, 2011

New York Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner has come out and blasted baseball’s luxury tax and revenue sharing plans. “Socialism, communism, whatever you want to call it, is never the answer,” the son of the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said about teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals.

Steinbrenner’s comments come less than a month after Yankees president Randy Levine accused the Texas Rangers of being “on welfare” for taking revenue sharing money.
