CARLOS SILVA PICTURED HERE WITH BILL BAVASI AT THE EXACT MOMENT THE FORMER MARINERS GM CONDEMNED HIMSELF TO A LIFETIME OF UNEMPLOYMENT
During this past offseason, pitchers Jose Contreras of the Chicago White Sox and Carlos Silva of the Seattle Mariners lost a combined 60 plus pounds. The pair’s hard work and training had both of their clubs excited for the 2009 Major League Baseball season. Those expectations were short-lived because even though both Silva and Contreras are thinner, their ERA’s are certainly FAT.
Earlier this week, Contreras was booed off the field in his last start for the White Sox. The team has announced they are pulling him from the starting rotation. In six starts, Contreras is 0-5 with an 8.19 ERA. Chicago loses literally every time he takes the mound.
Yesterday the Mariners put Carlos Silva on the disabled list. He apparently has a condition of “terminal sucking.” The reduced weight has actually inflated Silva’s ERA. Silva is 1-3 with an 8.48 ERA. Last year Silva went 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA. Over the last calendar year, Silva is arguably the worst pitcher in baseball history. In 2008, Silva won ONE game over the course of his last 24 starts. That means from May of 2008-May 2009 is 2-18 with a 7.07 ERA.
Contreras could be a short term problm for the White Sox. His $ 10 million annual contract expires after this season. There is a 0% chance of the White Sox re-signing him. Silva’s deal is another story. The Mariners inking of the portly Venezuelan is one of the most disastrous free agent signings in baseball history. Then Mariners GM Bill Bavasi gave Silva a four-year $48 million contract. That deal was one of the reasons Bavasi was fired by the Mariners. It was so bad that, although he currently has a minor job with the Cincinnati Reds, Bavasi will NEVER be a Major League GM again.
Even though Seattle has currently stashed Silva on the DL, they still owe him another $36 million dollars. The team has already said they are not going to release Silva because of the contract. Apparently that contract is the only thing Carlos Silva could eat that would help anyone.
