THE NFL’S IDEA OF PROGRESS: GUY WHO WAS THE VICTIM OF RACISM IS NOW MOCKED BECAUSE OF HIS AGE

SHERMAN LEWIS: THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS BINGO CALLER

Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn is obviously a Dead Man Walking. He was already going to end up getting fired. Sunday, he cemented his career death spiral by losing to the previously winless Kansas City Chiefs.

Although he might end up riding out the season, (and even that is looking more and more doubtful), Zorn took the first step towards Redskins irrelevancy Sunday night. He removed himself as the guy calling the plays for the Washington offense.

The buzz out of D.C. is that the logical candidate to replace Zorn as offensive coordinator for the Redskins is Sherman Lewis. Then again, Lewis has been passed up and screwed over innumerable times previously in his NFL career. And, it’s not exactly like the Washington Redskins have a particularly proud history when it comes to dealing with minorities.

Lewis was hired as an offensive “consultant” by the Skins a couple of weeks ago. At the time he got the call to come retool the Redskins offense, Lewis, now 67, was driving to his other part time job-calling bingo at the Novi Senior Center. The D.C. media has ridiculed Lewis because of that job. The truth is the only reason he had to take it was 1.) he was drummed out of the NFL solely and only because he’s African-American and 2.) the NFL has the worst pension plan in America.

Whether you choose to believe it or not, Sherman Lewis was the victim of institutional racism by the NFL. He should be revered as a Hall-of-Fame worthy assistant NFL coach and racial pioneer. Instead, Lewis has been fired, blackballed and had smears and lies  spread about his personal life and character for decades. The fact that a longtime victim of racism is now being derided by the media because of ageism is both ironic and shameful.

Lewis has one of the most impressive assistant coaching resumes in NFL history. After 14 years at Michigan State, Lewis won three Super Bowl rings as an assistant on Bill Walsh’s San Fransisco 49ers staff. He was Jerry Rice’s position coach with the Niners and helped develope both Rice and John Taylor as the team’s receivers coach.

Following that, Lewis spent eight seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. During his tenure at that job, Lewis accomplished a couple of tiny little things. First, he was the guy responsible for installing Brett Favre as the Packers quarterback AND calling all of his plays. Second, Lewis was the Packers offensive coordinator the year Favre and the gang won the Super Bowl in 1996. Every MVP Brett Favre ever won was with Sherm Lewis as his offensive coordinator. Favre threw for 30,894 yards and 236 tds in the eight years that Sherm Lewis called his plays. He’s never had that type of success before or since. You might think all of that might have gotten Lewis an NFL head coaching job. After all, the Packers offensive coordinator before Lewis got a head NFL job. So did the Packers defensive coordinator. As well as the offensive line and receivers coaches off that Packers staff. They all got NFL head coaching jobs. As for Lewis? He never got a sniff.

In fact, Lewis not only never got a head coaching job, he never even got interviews. Lewis finally soured over constantly being bypassed and left the Packers in 1999. Coincidentally, in the entire history of the National Football League, there was exactly ONE African-American head coach before 1999.

Plus, it’s not exactly like Lewis failed after that. All he did after being named as Dennis Green’s offensive coordinator in Minnesota was lead the Vikings to an 11-5 record. The year before Lewis got to Minnesota, Daunte Culpepper threw for ZERO yards. Under Lewis, Culpepper threw for 3,937 yards and 33 touchdowns. Anybody who can coax that type of season out of freakin’ Daunte Culpepper probably Does belong in the Hall of Fame. Lewis also pulled a career-best 1,500 yard season out of running back Robert Smith.

Oh yeah, did I also mention that in his brief tenure in Minnesota, Lewis helped develope a young receiver by the name of Rand Moss and lead him to what were then career high numbers?

These are facts: In Sherman Lewis’ first 18 seasons as an NFL assistant, his teams went 221-97-1. That’s a winning percentage of .694. In those 18 years, his teams made the plaoffs 15 times, played in nine NFC championship games, and won four Super Bowls. Lewis was an integral member of the brain trusts of both the ’80s Forty Niners and the’ 90s Packers.

Plus, Lewis was also responsible in no small way for the success and development of Jerry Rice AND Brett Favre AND Randy Moss. Does anybody else in the history of football have a resime like that? Anybody working today? Yet, the guy is constantly clowned on by the media because of his age. Obviously, it’s about to get even worse going to the Redskins.

Funny, but Dan Henning is also 67 and I don’t hear anybody dogging him over his age and he hasn’t won jack in the NFL since 1982. That’s when Ronald Reagan was president. Instead, Henning is hailed as a “genius” for bringing back the single-wing offense, which actually WAS innovative. In 1927. Henning was also in charge when a betting scandal rocked Boston College during his last head job.

Tom Moore, the NFL’s other high-profile offensive “consultant” who is employed by the Colts, is 71. Ever hear anydody dog him over his age? Granted, Moore has won ONE Super Bowl this century, which is more than Henning can say, but it’s not like Peyton Manning’s performance has gone down since Moore left as the team’s offensive coordinator. Quite the contrary.

There’s also one other lasting legacy from Sherman Lewis. He is literally THE reason the “Rooney Rule” was implemented by the NFL. Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney was so ashamed of the league’s treatment of Lewis that, after he became chairman of the diversity committe, he mandated that teams now have to interview minority candidates every time a coacing or front office job comes open.

Sherman Lewis (1961-64) earned All-America honors and finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1963.

LIONS WIN!!!! ZORN SCREWED

MAYBE REDSKINS COACH JIM ZORN SHOULDN’T HAVE LET TOM CRUISE CALL THE PLAYS THIS WEEK

The Detroit Lions picked up their first win since 2007 Sunday with a 19-14 victory over the Washington Redskins. The win ends a 19-game losing streak by the Lions-tying the second longest winless drought in NFL history.

The loss may be enough to cost Washington coach Jim Zorn his job. The Washington Post referred to Zorn as “embattled” and brought up the possibility of his firing in their game story.
