There are conflicting reports as to whether former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will be released from Riker’s Island Prison on gun charges any time soon. The New York Post is saying Burress will be freed within the next couple of weeks. Pro Football Talk is not so sure.

In any event, the Post says the Giants are considering bringing Burress back even though he went to prison for accidentally shooting himself in the leg with an unregistered gun and an NFL.com report seems to back that possibility up.

Riker’s Island inmate # 09-R-3260 got a rude welcome to prison yesterday. If yesterday’s prison introduction is any indication, Plaxico Burress, who wept in court during his sentencing earlier this week, is in for a LONG couple of years.

The New York Post is reporting that fellow inmates taunted Burress and chanted “Giants Suck!” and “Asshole! Asshole!” as he was “welcomed” behind bars. Burress received a two-year prison sentence on illegal gun charges after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh last year with his own Glock.

The Post points out that Burress was strip searched and shaved before being admitted to prison.

Former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress is going to prison. Burress pleaded guilty to weapons charges on Thursday and was sentenced to two years in state prison.

Even the liberal New York Times cried foul over the Burress sentence pointing out that Cleveland Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth only got 24 DAYS in jail for getting drunk and running over a man, killing him. Meanwhile, Burress gets 24 MONTHS in hard core pound-me-in-the-ass prison at Sing Sing for accidentally shooting himself.

Oops! You can forget about those rumors of Plaxico Burress joining Jay Cutler and signing with the Chicago Bears. Or anyone else.

Burress, the former New York Giants wide receiver, appears to be heading for prison. Today’s New York Post has an interview with legendary Manhattan district attorney Robert Morgenthau. The fact that he’s finally retiring apparently hasn’t mellowed Morgenthau any. The man who put Mark David Chapman, Bernhard Goetz and thousands of other criminals in jail, apparently has made it his mission to stick the former Giants Super Bowl star in prison.

The Post opens its article by saying, “It’s going to be Sing Sing for Plaxico…”

The paper says Burress already offered to spend one year in prison on a plea deal for illegal gun charges. Not enough. Morgenthau says he wants Burress to spend a minimum of two years of hard time in state prison saying, “He’s going to have to go to jail, whether by trial or by plea.”

You’ll recall, Burress was arrested after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a New York club last year.

Former New York Giants backup quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, now an ESPN announcer, says the New York Jets, or any other NFL team, would be wise to think twice before signing wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Speaking on the show “NFL Live,” Hasselbeck acknowledged Burress is a “dominant receiver at times” but added,

 

“But with that being said, I played with the guy. I was in the locker room with him for two years. He’s a disaster as a teammate. He’s a disaster as a guy you have to coach.”

 

Hasselbeck is the husband of Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a co-host on “The View.”

How many times have you heard the expression, “The rich aren’t like us.”

They’re not. In some cases they’re way dumber.

Legally challenged New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress may face additional criminal charges after police found more weapons in his house during a raid yesterday.

Authorities say they found a 9-mm handgun and a rifle along with ammunition after executing a search warrant of Burress’ New Jersey home Thursday. Burress still faces criminal charges for unlawfully possessing a handgun in New York. You may recall that Burress was charged after famously shooting himself in the leg in an incident last month.

Benjamin Brafman, who is Burress’ attorney,  is one of the top defense lawyers in the world. If I was a rich, African-American celebrity facing criminal charges, I wouldn’t even consider hiring anyone else. Particularly, if I were guilty. Brafman, you may recall, is the lawyer who got rapper Sean”P. Diddy” Combs off scott free in 1999 after a shooting in a New York club. In a work of legal magic, Brafman was able to get Combs and then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez out of trouble despite there being over 100 witnesses to the incident. Combs was eventually found not guilty on all charges by a jury.

Brafman was also once part of singer Michael Jackson’s legal team that helped the pop icon get off (so to speak) on child molestation charges. However, Brafman may be facing an uphill battle getting Burress acquitted. That’s because, unlike his previous celebrity clients, Plaxico Burress is STUPID. How else do you explain that almost a month after his arrest Burress may have had other illegal guns in his house. Burress had already incurred the wrath of New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. Now he may face criminal charges in New Jersey as well.

Odds are Burress didn’t fill out the proper paperwork to get those guns found Thursday to be made legal. After all, we know Burress isn’t much for paperwork. We know he recently lost a car worth some $150,000 because he didn’t have insurance on it. Also, don’t forget, the “illegal” firearm that Burress shot himself with was once legally registered in Florida. Shockingly, Burress let the paperwork lapse.

Police also found the bloody clothes Burress was wearing when he shot himself and a “suitcase full of money” in Burress’ closet during Thursday’s raid. While it’s certainly not illegal to have large sums of money in your house, that’s just one more detail that makes Plaxico Burress look bad. And, as we all know, image IS everything.
