NOT AGAIN!

November 18, 2010

GREG ODEN

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden is going to miss the entire season with a knee injury. Of a possible 328 NBA games, Oden will have played in a total of 82. That means Oden has missed 3/4 of his pro career with injuries.

Oden will have microfracture surgery on his left knee. He had already had the same surgery previously on his right knee and that doesn’t even count the patella tendon injury that caused him to miss most of last year.

Oft-injured Portland Trail Blazer center is way behind schedule in rehabbing his blown out knee. There are reports that he may not play until December.

FAMED DOG ABUSER QYNTEL WOODS MAY REPLACE LEBRON IN CLEVELAND

July 11, 2010

Qyntel Woods of Poland's Asseco Prokom reacts as he sits on the bench during their men's Euroleague basketball game against Lithuania's Zalgiris in Kaunas March 3, 2010.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN QYNTEL WOODS COULDN’T SHOW HIS FACE IN NBA ARENAS

Even back in Portland’s bad old days of the “Jail Blazers” there was only one player who was such a scumbag that he had his arrest filmed by local tv crews. That player was former first round draft pick Qyntel Woods. Woods was also the only player that was such a miscreant that the Blazers voided out his contract.

Prior to the Michael Vick incident, Woods was the most famous athlete ever convicted of dog fighting. He was convicted of first degree animal abuse in 2005 for staging dog fights in his house.

Now Woods may be returning to the NBA-as LeBron James’ replacement in Cleveland no less. Sunday’s Cleveland Plain Dealer listed Woods as a possible target for the Cavaliers after the former convict finished on the Euroleague first team All-Offense and All-Defense this past season.

WAS NIKE CONSPIRACY INVOLVED IN BLAZER FIRING?

March 22, 2010

Questions remain as to why the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers fired assistant GM and vice president of basketball operations Tom Penn last week. The firing came after Penn was given a raise and a contract extension this summer. Penn turned down an offer to join the Minnesota Timberwolves front office after being recruited as general manager.

The Blazers sited “philosophical differences” for the firing. Some think Penn’s agent overplayed his hand. Others sense conspiracy. Henry Abbott of ESPN.com thinks Penn’s “mysterious” firing could spell the end for Portland GM Kevin Pritchard, despite his record of good trades and shrewd draft picks.

Abbott specifically mentions former Nike executive Larry Miller in his article. Miller is currently the Trail Blazers team president. Adding to the “get Pritchard” rumors, John Canzano of “The Oregonian” wrote a column Sunday advising the Blazers “former golden boy” to “watch your back.” According to Canzano, “the panderers” in the organization who work for owner Paul Allen are now looking to oust Pritchard as well as Penn. Warren LeGarie (the agent for both Penn and Pritchard) referred to Penn’s firing as “a drive by.”

THE ONLY THING GREG ODEN HAS DONE THIS YEAR WITHOUT GETTING INJURED

GREG ODEN

The Big Lead links to a post by Worldstarhiphop.com today which claims to have a picture of Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden naked.

The story goes that Oden was sexting a woman who then plastered the picture all over the Internet. To see the (alleged) picture of Greg Oden naked:

* Update: In a radio interview, Oden has admitted the photo is of him. Quote of the year,

“Those pictures were taken and sent over a year and a half ago. I’ve definitely grown since then.”

ANOTHER CATASTROPHIC GREG ODEN INJURY

GREG ODEN

Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden’s already injury plagued career took a horrific turn for the worse Saturday night when he suffered what appeared to be a season-ending knee injury. Oden fractured his left patella in a win over the Houston Rockets and had to be removed from the floor with a stretcher.

The 13-8 Blazers appeared to be a lock for the playoffs before Oden’s injury. Now, Oden is in danger of joining Bill Walton and Sam Bowie as another Portland franchise center whose career is doomed by an unending series of injuries. This is the second time in three professional seasons that Oden will be out for the year with a knee injury. By the end of this season, he will have played in only 103 of 246 possible games in his pro career.

Oden’s injury is particularly sad because he worked out dilligently this offseason in an effort to avoid injuries. He was averaging 11.1 points-per-game, 8.5 rebounds, playing stellar defense and shooting .605 from the floor.

BLAZER FANS DISS MANAGEMENT, CHEER ALDRIDGE AT “FAN FEST”

October 5, 2009

Memo to Paul Allen: If you’re one of the richest men on the planet and CHOOSE to own a professional sports franchise, stop screwing your star players around over a couple thousand dollars.

According to the website Blazersedge.com, fans at the Portland Trail Blazers annual “Fan Fest” loudly cheered starting forward LaMarcus Aldridge during player introductions. They even chanted “Sign him! Sign him! Sign him!” to the delight of Aldridge and the squirming of Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard.

Portland fans are renowned for being among the most knowledgeable in sports. They are also among the most loyal. That simple Fan Fest was attended by more than 16,000 people.

Paul Allen has seen his personal fortune dwindle over the past several years. Once the second richest man in the world, Allen is now only #32 on the Forbes list of billionaires. Don’t feel too bad. Allen still has $10.2 billion in personal wealth. In fairness, Allen has been burned by paying NBA players high salaries in the past. His annual payroll once exceeded $100 million for a cast of underachieving criminals once referred to as the “Jail Blazers.” However, this collection of young players is NOT those guys. Led by Brandon Roy, Aldridge and Greg Oden, the Blazers went 54-28 last season and won the NBA’s Northwest Division. Just as importantly, there were zero character issues on that team and Roy and the rest have been  model citizens.

Still, once burned, twice shy and Allen took forever to get an extension for Roy done. Aldridge’s seemingly inevitable extension is taking even longer. Maybe this weekends fan reaction will speed up the signing.

BROKEASS JAZZ CAN’T AFFORD MILLSAP

July 14, 2009

 Paul Millsap by kris247.

PAUL MILLSAP

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the Utah Jazz don’t have enough cash on hand and would actually have to borrow money from the league or a bank in order to sign free agent forward Paul Millsap. Millsap signed an offer sheet with the Portland Trail Blazers last Friday. The article says Portland specifically structured their offer sheet to Millsap to make Utah come up with the cash.

Despite a bad economy and his own setbacks, Blazers owner Paul Allen is still the 18th richest man on the face of the earth. He is a multi-multi-multi billionaire. The Blazers proposed contract to Millsap calls for an immediate $5.6 million signing bonus and another $4.7 million of his salary be paid to the power forward instantly. The day he signs his contract. That’s $10.3 million up front.

The problem is the Jazz don’t have that much cash. They do have access to the money. The NBA has lent money to several ballclubs and the Tribune article quotes a local banker who says he is willing to lend the Jazz the money since they are “a good investment with little risk.”

However, it’s not a sure thing that Utah will fork over the cash for Millsap, who many consider simply a role player. A great role player, but a complimentary guy nonetheless. In order to get Millsap signed, the Jazz probably have to unload their current starting power forward, Carlos Boozer. There are numerous rumors surrounding Boozer who is scheduled to make over $12.65 million this season.
