MUNTADER AL-ZAIDI

Muntader al-Zaidi is the 28-year-old Iraqi tv journalist who gained worldwide fame yesterday by throwing his shoes at President George W. Bush and calling him a “dog.”

Unfortunately for Zaidi,  things didn’t go so well following his being tackled by Iraqi security. According to today’s New York Times, he was kicked and beaten by security forces until he “cried like a woman.” Zaidi now faces a possible 12 years in prison. However, his tv station is now demanding Zaidi’s immediate release.

Following the now legendary shoe throwing incident, President Bush proclaimed, “That’s what people do in a free society.”

Even as a room full of reporters could hear the screams of Zaidi as he was being beaten and kicked in the next room. Meanwhile, Zaidi’s tv station was reportedly playing “endless patriotic music” in a continuous loop with a picture of the television personality’s face plastered across the screen. There were also reportedly a host of protests throughout Iraq demanding the government free Zaidi.

DID GEORGE W. BUSH FALL OFF THE WAGON?

President Bush famously quit drinking and became a teetotaler at the age of 40. Did he relapse and start drinking this weekend?

The website Crooks and Liars has a picture that is supposed to be of President Bush drinking a pisco on a recent trip to Peru. A wire service story notes that a pisco is a “margarita-like” drink. It contains pisco- a Peruvian brandy-with lemon juice, and egg whites.

The pisco sour is the national drink of Peru. The country even celebrates “Pisco Sour Day” in February. There is even a pisco sour fountain in Lima’s historic main square.
