RICKY RUBIO

Spanish basketball player Ricky Rubio turned down a chance to play in the NBA this season. The 18-year-old Pete Maravich wannabe spurned the Minnesota Timberwolves after being the fifth selection in this year’s NBA Draft. He turned down the NBA to continue playing professional basketball in Spain.

All season long, there have been stories about how Rubio is doing just fine without the NBA. Rubio makes millions of tax-free dollars, enjoys “a pop-star aura,” and gets to winter in Barcelona not Minneapolis.

Now, Rubio’s Barcelona team will meet Olympiacos from Greece for the Euroleague championship. That championship game takes place later today and will be shown live on NBA TV at noon Eastern (9:00 a.m. Pacific.) Rubio’s playmaking has been a big factor in Barcelona’s championship run. Olympiacos is led by NBA free agent acquisitions Josh Childress and Linas Kleiza.

GO TO HELL: RICKY RUBIO IS DOING JUST FINE WITHOUT THE NBA

Basketball protege Ricky Rubio received a ton of criticism and negative publicity this offseason. Rubio spurned the Minnesota Timberwolves and signed to play professional basketball in Spain after he was the fifth pick in this year’s NBA draft.

Most of the media portrayed Rubio as greedy and immature for not jumping at a chance to play in the NBA. The real reason Rubio turned the NBA down was the buyout clause on his contract with Joventut. It was reported to be between $6.6 million and $8 million. NBA rules prohibit teams from paying more than $500,000 towards a contract buyout. It literally made no sense for Rubio to lose money by jumping to the NBA.

Besides, put yourself in Rubio’s position. Picture yourself as  a young hotshot about to enter the workforce in your chosen profession. Where would you like to spend your next two winters? Barcelona or Minneapolis. Let’s make the decision a little easier: If you pick Barcelona, you’ll make millions of dollars more and your employer will pay all of your taxes and housing costs. Not exactly a tough call. At least not to anyone who’s been to Minnesota in the winter.

Critics have said comparisons of Rubio to the late Pete Maravich are blasphemy. Actually, if you watch the above video, he looks EXACTLY like Maravich reincarnated. Rubio was just 18-years-old when the Euroleague started this year. He had 10 assists in 21 minutes in the game featured on the YouTube video above.

THAT SUCKS: RICKY RUBIO’S CONTRACT NOW BELONGS TO THE SPANISH IRS

RICKY RUBIO

This is a first in NBA history. Whichever team chooses Spanish forward Ricky Rubio in the upcoming NBA Draft will have to buy out his contract from Hacienda-Spain’s equivalent of the IRS.

Rubio is supposedly a guaranteed top five pick in this month’s NBA Draft. He has been rated as highly as the number two player in the draft. Unfortunately, Rubio’s contract calls for a buyout of over $6 million. By NBA rules, no team can contribute more than $550,000 towards buying a player out of his contract. That means every dime of Rubio’s potential NBA contract would have to go towards his Spanish basketball club for the buyout.

However, in a bizarre set of circumstances, Rubio’s team, DKV Jovetnut, finds itself in trouble with the Spanish government over back taxes. In fact, the team just signed away its buyout rights to Rubio’s contract to the Spanish IRS as part of a settlement. That’s right, Ricky Rubio’s contract now belongs to the government of Spain, and their IRS! Any deal struck by a potential NBA club will have to go through Hacienda.

Rubio, described as the “Spanish Pete Maravich,” is currently suing to get free of his contract. He is reportedly on his way to the U.S. for predraft workouts with several NBA teams.
