Boxing’s welterweight division has been broken wide open. “Sugar” Shane Mosley scored a stunning defeat of Antonio Margarito Saturday night in Los Angeles with a dominant performance capped by a ninth round technical knockout.
Mosley clearly controlled a fight where Margarito was the heavy favorite. It was the 37-year-old’s best performance in years. Meanwhile, Margarito was coming off the most impressive win of his career-a complete destruction of previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto.
Saturday’s win makes Mosley a four-time champion and virtually certain Hall-of-Famer. It also marks the first time that Antonio Margarito was ever knocked out. The fight was considered such a mismatch, and Margarito was so heavily favored, that it wasn’t even shown on pay-per view. Instead, HBO televised the fight for free on cable.
