COULD TED TURNER BUY BACK THE ATLANTA BRAVES?

TED TURNER

Long before John McCain decided to run for president, Ted Turner was the original “maverick.” The “Mouth of the South” was the most successful cable tv mogul in history.

Among other things in a remarkable career, Turner founded CNN, donated a billion dollars to the United Nations, was once Time magazine’s “Man of the Year,” and was married to actress Jane Fonda for 10 years.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ON THE COVER OF BOTH TIME AND SI?

There were also Turner’s forrays into the sports world. When he first burst onto the public scene, Turner served as captain for the United States team in the America’s Cup yacht race (where he showed up drunk to the press conference after winning the race.) He also bought the Atlanta Braves and Hawks professional sports franchises as programming for his cable tv networks. The Braves won their only World Series with Turner as an owner.

Turner has been basically quiet since being forced out as a tv executive following the CNN/Time Warner merger. Currently he’s out promoting a new book. During an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts this week, Turner let slip that he would be interested in buying back the Atlanta Braves.

Outwardly this doesn’t make much sense. Turner is approaching 70-years-old. Like everyone else, he’s also lost a ton of money in the recent stock market collapse. Still, if there’s anywhere where Ted Turner is considered part of the “old boy’s network” it’s baseball. Also, Ted Turner currently owns more real estate than any other single individual in America.

Bet you didn’t know that.
