Associated Press Mike Sellers said he "made a mistake" by tossing the American flag during pregame introductions Friday.

MIKE SELLERS EXHIBITS HIS FLAG PLAY SKILLS DURING SATURDAY’S WASHINGTON REDSKINS GAME

Mike Sellers of the Washington Redskins says he’s sorry. REALLY sorry.

In an effort to fire up fans at the nation’s capitol, the Redskins have adopted a practice of having the last player to leave the tunnel run out to the 5o yard line carrying an American flag. Saturday the Redskins continued the tradition in their home game against the New England Patriots. Fullback Mike Sellers led the charge.

When Sellers got to the 50 yard line, he did what football players do. He spiked the object he was carrying. Unfortunately for Sellers, he wasn’t carrying a football but rather the Stars and Stripes. Reaction against Sellers was both swift and harsh. Fans were outraged over Sellers’ “unamerican” display.

A hurt Sellers says he meant “no disrespect.” He just got carried away. Sellers is the son of a career military man and knows about flag etiquette. He simply screwed up.
