Yesterday, we posted an item about Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera showing up in Tigers’ clubhouse Saturday with a bruised and battered face. Reporters demanded to know how Cabrera got those bruises. He originally said his dog did it. Turns out it was his wife.
You can now add “drunken wife beater” to Cabrera’s resume.
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Cabrera was out drinking until 6:00 a.m. then came home and drunkenly awakened his wife and baby. An altercation ensued during which Mrs. Cabrera called 911. Police arrived to find Cabrera with scratches on his face and his wife with a fat lip. Both parties refused to say what happened or press charges. The police took Cabrera into custody and gave him a blood alcohol test. Cabrera registered a staggering .26. That’s more than three times the legal limit.
To make a bad situation worse, it turns out that Cabrera had been partying the night away with members of the opposing team, the Chicago White Sox. Keep in mind that this was before arguably the most important game of his career. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski finally picked Cabrera up at the police station at 8:30 a.m. Cabrera went 0-4 and stranded six runners in the Tigers game against the White Sox on Saturday. The Tigers lost and ended up being caught in the standings by the Minnesota Twins.
The outrage against Cabrera has been predictable. There are even calls to send Cabrera home for the year BEFORE the playoffs. It’s obviously a bit of a distraction when the Major League Baseball website has a front page story about the star first baseman of a potential team drunkenly beating his wife during a pennant stretch. Detroit now has a face (literally) to pin the Tigers choke job on. Cabrera now joins the ranks Steve Bartman, Bill Buckner and many other goats in baseball history.
