Jim Thorpe was one of the first African-American golfers on the PGA tour. He won three tournaments in the ’80s and later became one of the top players on the Champions Tour, for players over 50. Thorpe has $15 million in career earnings.
Now, he’s going to prison.
Thorpe didn’t file an income tax return in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He owes more than $2 million in back taxes. The Tampa Tribune has the sad details. Thorpe didn’t pay the taxes during that period of time because of a gambling habit. Rather than pay the taxes, Thorpe spent all of the $5 million dollars he earned on gambling. He managed to set aside only $3,000 to pay the IRS despite filing numerous extensions.
