BIGGEST BASEBALL TRADE RUMOR SINCE JOE DIMAGGIO FOR TED WILLIAMS

RYAN HOWARD FOR ALBERT PUJOLS?

ESPN writer Buster Olney shocked the baseball world yesterday when he wrote a column suggesting that the Philadelphia Phillies had been having “internal discussions” about acquiring three-time MVP Albert Pujols from the St. Louis Cardinals. In exchange, according to Olney, the Phillies would ship their 50-homer first baseman,Ryan Howard, to the Cardinals.

Talk of the proposed swap has blown up on the Internet. However, not everyone is happy with the proposed trade. Cardinals fans are so irate that they have ridiculed the website “MLB Trade Rumors” simply for mentioning the idea and linking to the Olney article.

A Pujols/Howard trade would be one of the biggest in baseball history, Baseball legend has it that Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey once agreed to a Joe DiMaggio for Ted Williams swap but called it off the next day after sleeping on it.

I believe the proposed trade of Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio took place on a train between New York and Boston late one night. The next morning the owners realized they couldn’t make the trade because of the reaction the fans would have. So they called it off.
