UNBELIEVABLY, BOBBY BONILLA FINDS A WAY TO GET METS FANS TO HATE HIM EVEN MORE

METS PREVOUS FINANCIAL ADVISER BERNIE MADOFF

No wonder Bernie Madoff thought the New York Mets were such easy suckers.

Today’s Wall Street Journal has a story about how the baseball team was so anxious to get out of the final year of free agent bust Bobby Bonilla’s contract that it’s going to cost them an extra $29 million starting next season.

Bonilla was a huge disappointment with the Mets after signing a five-year, $29 million contract with the team before the 1992 season. He was eventually traded to the Baltimore Orioles after being run out of New York by Mets fans. Inexplicably, Steve Phillips, the Mets geniuslothario GM at the time, traded to get Bonilla BACK in 1999. Bonilla then disgraced himself even further when he was caught playing cards with teammate Rickey Henderson in the Mets locker room while the deciding game of the NLCS as STILL GOING ON.

Phillips was so crazed to get out of the final year of Bonilla’s contract (worth $5.9 million) that he agreed to a deferment with a huge balloon payment. That payment takes effect next summer. The Mets will have to pay Bonilla (or his estate if he drops dead) $1.9 million per-season for the next 25 years.

ONE OF MANY BAD LIFE DECISIONS MADE BY FORMER METS GM STEVE PHILLIPS
