The reports Friday morning that the New York Yankees and legendary free agent shortstop Derek Jeter were $50 million apart on a new contract were wrong. Actually, there’s a difference of $75 million.
The Yankees will offer Jeter a three-year contract for $45 million according to mlbtraderumors.com. A separate report had Jeter seeking up to $20 million a season for six years. Speculation is the Yankees may be greasing the skid for Jeter’s departure. Owner Hal Steinbrenner has called the negotiations “not personal.” However, the club has said on record that their captain will be allowed to “test the market.” Various clubs including the Baltimore Orioles and even the hated Boston Red Sox have been linked to Jeter.
Derek Jeter a member of the Red Sox????? It could happen.
