MISERY, THY NAME IS KYLE BROTZMAN

LIFE-ALTERING SCREWUP #1

LIFE-ALTERING SCREWUP #2

Think of the biggest goats and chokers in sports history. Bill Buckner, Steve Bartman, Chris Webber, Scott Norwood. Although each of these men changed the sports world with their ineptness, none of them actually screwed up TWICE in their historic moments of sports shame.

Meet Boise State University kicker Kyle Brotzman.

Brotzman single-handedly cost Boise State their chance at a national championship, a BCS Bowl appearance, an undefeated season or even a WAC championship. Brotzman, who had missed just three kicks all season, missed two incredibly short field goals within two minutes. Brotzman’s misses resulted in a 34-31 overtime win for the University of Nevada over the Broncos.

BSU was undefeated and ranked #3 in the human polls and fourth by the BCS. A win over nationally-ranked Nevada would have probably vaulted Boise State past TCU and into a major BCS game, like the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, now we’ll never know. SOLELY because Brotzman put himself in sports history as arguably THE biggest choker ever.

Boise State actually led the game 17-0 and 24-7. However, Nevada stormed back in the second half and tied the game at 31-31 with just nine seconds left. At that point, Boise State quarterback/Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore made what might have been the greatest play of his stellar career. Moore heaved a hail mary pass downfield which was caught by receiver Titus Young. Young not only hauled in the catch, but had the presence of mind to call timeout with just one second left (later changed to two seconds.) Brotzman then trotted on the field for a 26-yard game-winning field goal. Make that a POTENTIAL 26-yard game-winning field goal. Brotzman missed, pushing the kick to the right.

Ordinarily, that alone would have been enough to place Brotzman in the sports Hall of Shame but he wasn’t through for the evening. Brotzman missed another short kick in overtime, this time from just 29 yards. The second miss was too much for Boise State to overcome. Nevada kicker Anthony Martinez kicked a 34-yarder to put BSU into their misery and win the game for the Wolfpack.

Brotzman’s performance was so shameful that Tim Dahlberg’s original AP game recap article redacted his name. Within minutes of the Boise State loss, the Internet chatrooms and Facebook were filled with hate directed at Brotzman. There are even now Kyle Brotzman jokes. Example:

“Hey, did you hear Kyle Brotzman was so upset after tonight’s game that he tried to commit suicide by hanging himself?” “Yeah, but he missed kicking the chair out from under him.”

There were also no less than six faux Facebook sites set up making fun of Brotzman including:

“Kyle Brotzman Sucks” (465 likes) and

“Kyle Brotzman Sucks at Life and Clutch Kicks”

Ironically, on his own Facebook page, Kyle Brotzman lists “Reno 911!” as his favorite tv show, Seriously.

With Brotzman’s epic failure, BSU now faces a postseason not of a BCS Championship Game or Rose Bowl berth but staying at home and playing in the Humanitarian Bowl. Forget the “we-win-as-a-team-we-lose-as-a-team”platitudes. Brotzman’s missed kicks literally cost his school MILLIONS of dollars as well as a possible BCS title shot. The payout for the Rose Bowl is $18 million. The Humanitarian Bowl? $750,000.

Finally, there’s a disturbing trend by some to let Brotzman off the hook. After all, the reasoning goes, “He’s just a 21-year-old kid.” Bullshit. Nobody ever said Chris Webber was “just a kid.” Need I point out the only obvious difference?

MAMMY

The same day as his shankfest, Brotzman was named “WAC Player of the Week.” Brotzman is Boise State’s all-time leading scorer. Depending on what he does against Utah State and whatever crap bowl game the Broncos slink into, he may end up the all-time leading scorer in NCAA HISTORY. If he gets to accept the accolades, Brotzman also gets the criticism too.

Wow, I can’t believe that people are treating this young man like this. He may suck at kicking a football, and I mean really suck at kicking a football, but that is no grounds to make hate sites and say horrible things about him. Don’t you think the kid feels bad enough on his own? Does his position as a kicker define him as person? The answer is NO! So a message to all of the haters out there, maybe instead of wasting all of your time focusing on Kyle’s missed kicks, you should get your hands out of your pants, lift your lazy butts out of your computer chairs, and maybe find something more productive to do with your lives instead of crying and complaining over it like a little girl. If you think you can do a better job stop your whining and crying, dry the tears from your eyes, and tryout for the team. Enough said! GO BSU!

My god, this IS a college kid. He was a walk-on. He’s had a nice college career up until now and he’s a business major who will graduate next year. Amazing all of you so outraged don’t react to other “missteps” by corporate leaders and politicians the same way. Their mistakes cost lives. Kyle’s mistake cost his team a game.
    Get a life.

  3. Youngblood Says:

Great point about Brotzman not being a kid. Hey, 21-year-old Madison Bumgarner manned up and just pitched 8 scoreless innings in the 4th game of the World Series last month. 21 years-old is not a “kid.” Brotzman is a grown-up adult. It’s also quite obvious that he’s a classic choke-artist. That kid should pack up the U-Haul and get out of Boise and in to the witness-protection program….

  4. Dani Says:

The author of this post, the negative comments here and elsewhere qre just ridiculous! He didn’t “single handedly lose the game” – that took a TEAM effort … The defense for letting the Wolf Pack tie up the game, the offense for not scoring while they were catching up, the penalties that cost them yards and downs … Yes this player missed two kicks and messed up, just as every one that played in this and every game ever has messed up. It should have never come down to this if we’d played to our full ability the entire game. And 21 is still a kid in so many ways! True Bronco Nation fans support him and the entire team for a great season. They’re not defined by this one game, one incident.

  5. bj Says:

why was dave cokin flipping that kid off

  6. zach Says:

kyle brotzman sucks! after watching him screw over boise state my freind turned to me and said they have to take his shoelaces away so he doesnt hang himself. lol

  7. Jeremy Says:

Kyle Brotzman sucks!! He’s lost two important games for BSU. I don’t care how many points he has he can’t kick when we NEED IT! Brotzman should only be punting, trusting him to fieldgoals was coach Pete’s mistake. I would bench his ass for the rest of the season, we have a back up freshman that can do the job.

    • KATE Says:

What about our defense that completely shut down after 3rd quarter and let them basically have a touchdown?? Is that Kyle’s fault too?? Just a reminder, the two field goals woudn’t have even mattered if our defense would have done their job and prevented Nevada from their touchdown in the third quarter! In third quarter, it was almost like our defense suffered from amnesia everytime they got the ball and it was almost like they just sat around and watched them score a touchdown! They obviously aren’t used to playing for a full game and Coach Pete should of really worked on the conditioning!

  8. Frank Says:

It was a classic choke. Oddly we half expected it. Football 101 teaches of coach Bobby Bowden’s woes due to “wide right”. He should not have been the kicker, as we have been pointing out since our loss to TCU 17-16.

The guy had a lay-up and choked. It will cost 18 million dollars and set the program back 5 years at least.

  9. Jim Says:

Really? He single-handedly lost the game for Boise? Yeah, because there weren’t 59 minutes of football played before Brotzman missed his first kick… Boise had plenty of opportunities to make plays and win this game–the game doesn’t come down to one (or two, for that matter) play. This author is a shameless bastard.

  10. Amber Says:

If BSU’s defense hadn’t left the building second half, we wouldn’t have needed our kicker to win the game for us anyways… just sayin’.

  11. jack Says:

i love it, fuck bsu, boise isnt a state. BROTZMAN for HEISMAN!!!!

  12. Sorie Says:

What is with all these sympathetic people pleading for this young mans case. He lost the game, Kyle Brotzman lost the game. His team got him to that point to finish the job, and he filed big time. If he would of made the kick’s he an he alone would have been a hero. But life dishes out some crappy hands every so often. Loosing Boise state a shot at the title, bowl earnings and respect is going to be tough to burden.. to me he should of thought long and hard about the consequences of him missing during the time out. He is name is junk, he will have to change it, the whole college community knows he has brought tremendous shame to his school and the fans. FHL.

  13. Austin Says:

wow. you guys that blame it on brotzman are douche bags, sure he messed up but thats the gay part of team sports. if the offense would have made more plays and scored more, kyle would have never been on the field,.
Team sports are gay, motocross is badass. GO BRONCOS!

  14. mike Says:

Wow, I can’t believe the author pulled out the race card…
Here are a couple of other obvious differences– The coaches had just told Webber that they were out of timeouts and explained that if he called a timeout they would lose. Every single other player on the team was aware of this and its inexplicable that he supposedly wasn’t. Brotzman choked badly, but he didn’t forget the rules of the game at the most important moment of his career.
That was the championship game, not a regular season game.
