The Boulder Daily Camera is reporting that former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney may be denied another chance to lead the Buffaloes because of his ties to the religious group “Promise Keepers.” McCartney led the school to their only National Championship in 1990. He has been reported to be interested in the Colorado football job which is currently vacant.
The paper says the CU search committe has received up to 20 letters from campus faculty members and others who oppose McCartney’s hiring because of the Promise Keepers and their positions on homosexuality and other issues. According to the Daily Camera, McCartney once made the statement that homosexuality “is an abomination against almighty God” from a Colorado Universiy podium. The school later implemented a policy stating, “coaches should not organize or conduct religious activities, including promotion of prayer or Bible readings by coaches or players.”
