Currently, 3 of 119 Division 1 coaches in college football are black. That’s apparently one too many for Bill McCartney.
McCartney is the former coach at the University of Colorado. He won a National Championship at the school back in 1990. McCartney had actively lobbied for the vacant CU coaching job which became open after Dan Hawkins was fired.
Friday, McCartney leaked to the media that Washington Redskins tight ends coach Jon Embree was going to be named Colorado’s next head coach. This was before any announcement by CU, causing the school to have to deny the report. McCartney didn’t stop there. McCartney further opined that Embree was only offered the job because he’s black. Said McCartney, “It was about setting the table for a black man to come in.”
Despite a thin coaching resume, Embree is a Colorado graduate. The school has been adament that it wants to bring in a CUalum as coach. There was a report earlier in the week that some 20 CU faculty members had signed a letter against McCartney possibly being re-hired by Colorado based on his past anti-gay statements.
