BOWLING NOT POPULAR WITH THE BROTHERS

August 3, 2010

JUSTIN BIEBER

TAYLOR SWIFT

Just kill me. This is the second Justin Bieber post in two days.

The International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum has decided to induct one celebrity this year. No, it’s not anyone you’d expect like Jeff Bridges of “The Big Lebowski” fame:

Nor even Bill Murray who once made the bowling movie “Kingpen”

Nope, the top two vote getters in this year’s online voting are teen idols Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. (Maybe it was the tie in with OK! Magazine.)

You know who DIDN’T  fare well in the online voting? The poll’s African-American celebrities. NBA players Dwight Howard and Chris Paul were crushed by Bieber and Swift. Justin Bieber received 600,738 votes. Chris Paul? Just 577 total votes.

KOLAN MCCONIUGHEY

As TMZ has noted, “It’s on!”

President Barack Obama made a joke comparing his bowling style to the Special Olympics on Jay Leno last night. Needless to say, it hasn’t gone over very well. Now President Obama has been challenged to a bowling match. By an actual Special Olympian.

Kolan McConiughey says he thinks the president is “cool” but adds “he can’t beat me.” McConiughey has bowled three perfect 300 games. He says he would like to go to the White House and bowl against Obama.

IS BOWLING COOL?

Believe it or not, The Wall Street Journal just featured an article on bowling. Shockingly, according to the most recent figures, participation in the sport may be at an all-time high.

If the Journal’s numbers are to be believed, 67 million people in the U.S. went bowling at least once last year. Over 43 million of those people bowled more than once. Both of those figures are approaching an all-time high for the number of American bowlers.

Although league memberships are down nationwide, the sport is apparently syphoning off  a large number of casual young bowlers. Many of these younger players are drawn to facilities that have bowling because of video games, pool and air hockey. They end up bowling occassionally as an afterthought. Still, their numbers, along with parents who book “bowling birthday parties,” are enough to make the growth of the sport in recent years tangible.

The Journal article also points out one other interesting fact. Thanks to “increased technology” bowling scores are higher than ever (unless you’re Barack Obama.) The article credits ball surfaces and “lanes oiled in specific patterns” for the skyrocketing scores of the average bowler. In 1978-79 there were 5,373 perfect “300 games” bowled in America. Last year there were 52,229 perfect games.
