ANDREI ARLOVSKI AT WEIGH-IN FOR AFFLICTION: DAY OF RECKONING

The Ultimate Fighting Championship may be looking to score a knockout blow to rival MMA organization Affliction tonight.

Both organizations are staging pay-per-view events within a week of each other. In a tough financial climate, UFC  94 comes just a week after the Affliction card and two weeks after UFC 93. That’s three major MMA pay-per-view events in three weeks for fight fans in these tough economic times.

Financially, Affliction needs a good showing to be able to remain viable. They had originally planned their second event for Las Vegas, but that was cancelled after glacier-slow ticket sales and lack of interest. The “Day of Reckoning” card features Fedor (arguably the top MMA fighter in the world) taking on former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. It is also loaded with UFC alumni and veteran fighters like Matt Lindland, Josh Barnett, Vitor Belfort, Babalu and Paul Buentello.

Next week’s UFC 94 card is also deep and is topped by a Georges St. Pierre vs B.J. Penn title fight.

GOLDEN BOY SCHEDULES MARGARITO FIGHT ON THE SAME NIGHT THAT THEIR MMA PARTNER AFFLICTION HAS AN EVENT

ANTONIO MARGARITO

With the growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, it was inevitable that there would be more and more dates where there are major MMA events scheduled on the same nights as big time boxing matches. Although some conflicts are bound to happen, there’s no reason both boxing and MMA can’t co exist. It will obviously be hard to “grow the pie” in this economy, and both sports are chasing a similar audience. However, their audiences are not identical. There is some cross over.

January 24th marks a date where an MMA event will go head-to-head with boxing for pay per view dollars. Antonio Margarito will fight Sugar Shane Mosley at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for boxing’s WBA welterweight championship. Margarito is coming off a giant win over Miguel Cotto.

On the same night as Margarito/Mosley, MMA organization Affliction is holding their second major card. It’s baffling to many why Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions (which is promoting the Margarito fight) would choose to hold a fight on the same night as Affliction, their MMA partner, is holding a make or break event. The reason? Three words. No, make that three letters: H-B-O.

Meanwhile, Affliction has announced it’s card for their January 24th “Day of Reckoning” card:

Pay-per-view fights:
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski
Josh Barnett vs. TBA
Vitor Belfort vs. TBA
Matt Lindland vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon

The undercard fights include Paul Buentello and Nogueira.
