RYAN HOWARD FOR ALBERT PUJOLS?

ESPN writer Buster Olney shocked the baseball world yesterday when he wrote a column suggesting that the Philadelphia Phillies had been having “internal discussions” about acquiring three-time MVP Albert Pujols from the St. Louis Cardinals. In exchange, according to Olney, the Phillies would ship their 50-homer first baseman,Ryan Howard, to the Cardinals.

Talk of the proposed swap has blown up on the Internet. However, not everyone is happy with the proposed trade. Cardinals fans are so irate that they have ridiculed the website “MLB Trade Rumors” simply for mentioning the idea and linking to the Olney article.

A Pujols/Howard trade would be one of the biggest in baseball history, Baseball legend has it that Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey once agreed to a Joe DiMaggio for Ted Williams swap but called it off the next day after sleeping on it.

ALBERT PUJOLS

Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated has named his “All-Decade” team for Major League Baseball. The team includes:

C : Jorge Posada

1B: Albert Pujols

2B: Jeff Kent

SS: Derek Jeter

3B: Alex Rodriguez

LF: Manny Ramirez

CF: Carlos Beltran

RF: Vladimir Guerrero

DH: David Ortiz

LHP: Randy Johnnson

RHP: Pedro Martinez

RP: Mariano Rivera

Among those Verducci left off his list was Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who had more hits than any other player of the 2000’s. Verducci also has some interesting stats. For instance, portly journeyman Livan Hernandez has thrown more innings than any other pitcher of the decade.
