MANNY PACQUIAO BLOODIES ANTONIO MARGARITO

Sports Illustrated called it a “dominating performance.” Pound-for-pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao picked up his record EIGHTH world championship with a unanimous decision over Antonio Margarito Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

Margarito was lucky to even get the match after disgracefully cheating in a match against Shane Mosley in January of 2009. Pacquiao’s camp even accused Margarito of cheating before this fight after apparently finding a banned supplement in his dressing room.

However, even though he was smaller and lighter, Pacquiao pummeled and battered Margarito. Pac-Man won round after round and turned Margarito’s face into a bloody mess.

ANTONIO MARGARITO: TRAINER ADMITS TO TAMPERING WITH FIGHTER’S HAND WRAPPINGS

The state of California came after boxer Antonio Margarito on Tuesday. It worked. Margarito had his boxing license suspended for one year and his trainer had his license revoked.

The state sent a deputy attorney general to prosecute Margarito at a hearing before the California State Athletic Commission. California also sent a state inspector who testified that he found “illegal” pads hidden in Margarito’s hand wrappings before his January fight in Los Angeles against “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

Maragarito’s trainer Javier Capetillo attempted to take the fall for his fighter by accepting blame for the hand wraps. He had already been temporarily suspended by the California State Athletic Commission. During Tuesday’s hearing the commission expressed doubts that Capetillo had “accidentally” inserted implants into Margarito’s hand wraps before the Mosley fight. Officials discovered the illegal hand wraps before the Mosley fight.

Margarito’s illegal actions call into question his string of impressive knockouts including last year’s victory over Miguel Cotto. California officials tried to introduce evidence of Margarito’s cheating in the Cotto fight as well, but were denied by the commission.

ANTONIO MARGARITO VS SHANE MOSLEY

MOSLEY SHOCKS MARGARITO

Boxing’s welterweight division has been broken wide open. “Sugar” Shane Mosley scored a stunning defeat of Antonio Margarito Saturday night in Los Angeles with a dominant performance capped by a ninth round technical knockout.

Mosley clearly controlled a fight where Margarito was the heavy favorite. It was the 37-year-old’s best performance in years. Meanwhile, Margarito was coming off the most impressive win of his career-a complete destruction of previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto.

Saturday’s win makes Mosley a four-time champion and virtually certain Hall-of-Famer. It also marks the first time that Antonio Margarito was ever knocked out. The fight was considered such a mismatch, and Margarito was so heavily favored, that it wasn’t even shown on pay-per view. Instead, HBO televised the fight for free on cable.

GOLDEN BOY SCHEDULES MARGARITO FIGHT ON THE SAME NIGHT THAT THEIR MMA PARTNER AFFLICTION HAS AN EVENT

ANTONIO MARGARITO

With the growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, it was inevitable that there would be more and more dates where there are major MMA events scheduled on the same nights as big time boxing matches. Although some conflicts are bound to happen, there’s no reason both boxing and MMA can’t co exist. It will obviously be hard to “grow the pie” in this economy, and both sports are chasing a similar audience. However, their audiences are not identical. There is some cross over.

January 24th marks a date where an MMA event will go head-to-head with boxing for pay per view dollars. Antonio Margarito will fight Sugar Shane Mosley at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for boxing’s WBA welterweight championship. Margarito is coming off a giant win over Miguel Cotto.

On the same night as Margarito/Mosley, MMA organization Affliction is holding their second major card. It’s baffling to many why Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions (which is promoting the Margarito fight) would choose to hold a fight on the same night as Affliction, their MMA partner, is holding a make or break event. The reason? Three words. No, make that three letters: H-B-O.

Meanwhile, Affliction has announced it’s card for their January 24th “Day of Reckoning” card:

Pay-per-view fights:
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski
Josh Barnett vs. TBA
Vitor Belfort vs. TBA
Matt Lindland vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon

The undercard fights include Paul Buentello and Nogueira.
