MATT HUGHES RETURNS TO THE OCTAGON FOR UFC 112

The Ultimate Fighting Championship breaks new ground with UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi today. Not only is this the first UFC event to take place in the Middle East, but it is also a rare outdoor event for the Mixed Martial Arts organization.

The UFC 112 card features two World Championship matches. Middleweight champion Anderson Silva takes on Demian Maia while B.J. Penn battles Frankie Edgar for the lightweight belt. UFC 112 also features  Matt Hughes, arguably the greatest welterweight in UFC history. Hughes successfully defended his UFC belt a record seven straight fights. He is also tied with Chuck Liddell for the most wins in UFC history with 16. Hughes takes on another MMA legend in Renzo Gracie.

Following tonight’s card in Dhubai, the UFC has announced plans to hold matches in Afghanistan and China.

PENN WINS AT UFC 107

B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez

B.J. Penn retained his lightweight title with an easy victory over Diego Sanchez Saturday night at UFC 107 in Memphis. The fight was stopped in the fifth round after Penn kicked Sanchez on the forehead, opening up a massive gash. A ringside doctor advised the fight be stopped following a brief delay and Penn was declared the victor.

It hardly mattered. Penn would have been awarded the decision anyway. He dominated the fight. In fact, Penn almost finished off Sanchez in the first 45 seconds of the match, knocking him to the canvas.

Also on Saturday’s card, Frank Mir put himself back in the UFC heavyweight title picture as he beat Cheick Kongo in just 72 seconds. Other winners on Saturday included Kenny Florian and Jon Fitch.

B.J. PENN IS STILL PISSED OVER VASELINEGATE

 vaseline

UFC fighter B.J. Penn has filed a formal complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission claiming that Georges St. Pierre used a “greasing agent” in their January 31st welterweight championship fight at UFC 94. Penn lost the match and his attempt to become the first dual title holder in UFC history. He has been complaining nonstop since the end of the fight about St. Pierre’s excessive use of vaseline.

Penn says he is scheduled to fight St. Pierre for a third time in the summer of 2009. He made the following statement on his website, Bjpenn.com :

For the past several days I have been reading statements made by St. Pierre and Greg Jackson about our fight on January 31. St. Pierre claims that he is “not a cheater” and that he and Greg Jackson will have “no problem with a rematch in the summer of 2009.” To the untrained eye the grease might not look like much, but every grappler knows the effect that it has. Being able to apply your submissions and sweeps or just being able to hold on to your opponent to defend yourself from being hit is absolutely critical! There is a reason why you are not allowed to put grease anywhere on your body except for the area around your eyes. Because of the grease applied to St.Pierre’s Body the Nevada State Athletic Commissionâs executive director, Keith Kizer has stated that the Penn-St. Pierre fight “definitely wasnât fair.” I hereby accept George St. Pierre and Greg Jackson’s challenge for a fight in the summer 2009. Lets call Dana now and set it up.

GEORGES ST. PIERRE

The last time Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn fought the result was a razor thin split decision win for GSP. This time it wasn’t nearly as close.

St. Pierre battered Penn for a victory at UFC 94 in Las Vegas Saturday night. Doctors stopped the fight before the fifth round. With the victory, St. Pierre retains his UFC welterweight championship. Penn was attempting to become the first UFC fighter to hold a belt in two weight classes. He remains the UFC lightweight champion.

Lyoto Machida, Karo Parisyan, Jon Jones and Jon Fitch also won their fights on Saturday night’s card which was held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
