Another reason to love Ozzie Guillen

March 31, 2011

OZZIE GUILLEN

One of the best things about Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is that he says aloud what people are often just thinking. For instance, the White Sox spent Opening Day of the 2011 baseball season going through a workout in snowy Cleveland where the city just received several inches of snow. Ever wonder just why the hell MLB opens early season games in cold-weather, snowy hellholes like Cleveland? So’s Ozzie:

“Very stupid” was Guillen’s reaction to opening the baseball season in Cleveland. The White Sox ended up building a snowman and having a snowball fight.

OZZIE GUILLEN DENIES REPORT THAT HE WAS GOING TO PUNCH HIS GM IN THE FACE

OZZIE GUILLEN

Volatile Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen says the rumors aren’t true. He did not come close to a physical confrontation with his boss, White Sox GM Ken Williams.

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote in his column Friday that Guillen and Williams had a “heated shouting match” and “almost came to blows” Tuesday night. The argument was over the White Sox drafting Guillen’s youngest son, Ozney, in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball draft. Guillen reportedly told his son that he would personally pay him $50,000 to turn the White Sox down and go to college saying, “We have a deal in my family, if you don’t get picked in the sixth round you go to college.”

Guillen’s other son, Oney, was fired from his job with the White Sox earlier this year. Oney Guillen was running his dad’s Twitter page and some stray Tweets appeared on the site which the club did not approve of. Tension from that confrontation may have bled over into Tuesday’s incident. Guillen and Williams have known each other since the mid ’80s when they played together in the minors and with the White Sox.

Guillen openly questioned whether he and Williams could still be “friends.” Meanwhile, Williams said, “I will not deny that I am growing weary of the soap opera.”

OZZIE GUILLEN TO BOBBY JENKS: STOP BEING SUCH A FATASS

November 22, 2009

BOOBALICIOUS BOBBY JENKS: APPARENTLY FAT, DRUNK AND STUPID IS A WAY TO GO THROUGH LIFE AS CHICAGO WHITE SOX CLOSER

Although he said “we love this kid to death,” Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen took a backhanded shot at closer Bobby Jenks in yesterday’s Chicago Sun-Times. There seems to be a dispute over how the pitcher suffered a season-ending calf injury last September. Jenks says he was hurt covering first base. There’s also a report that Jenks was injured simply stretching in pregame warmups-the victim of his own fatness.

Jenks came to the White Sox after being cut by the Angels. This despite being a 24-year-old phenom with a 100 MPH fastball. Past stories (particularly a piece in ESPN The Magazine several years ago) portrayed Jenks as an alcoholic, quasi-racist who grew up in a cabin in backwoods Idaho and whose grades were too horrible to play high school baseball. He was labeled as immature “with little regard for his health and career.” Jenks, though, has been awesome as the White Sox closer, piling up 140 saves in their last four seasons. He was also an integral part of the team’s World Championship run in 2005. However, Jenks’ save numbers have declined in each of the past four seasons, many say due to a lack of conditioning.

Jenks has already been ridiculed for his fatness while chatting online for MLB.com this offseason. He has also been portrayed as fat in article after article after article as well as in chatrooms where he has also been called “stupid” and “barely able to read.” In any event, Guillen says Jenks needs to lose weight this offseason, if just to shut his critics up:

”The first time I told him he was overweight, I told him to his face. When you have that size, you don’t perform, all of a sudden you have weight problems. He can’t deny that his weight is a concern. Come on, he’s a big man.”

“Right now, that kid is going to carry that cross the rest of his career because of his size.”

“Bobby can have a broken arm and not be able to pitch anymore, and the first thing people will say is he’s out of shape. That’s life.”

OZZIE GUILLEN IS NOT A COLLEGE FOOTBALL FAN

OZZIE GUILLEN IS EITHER GOING TO STRANGLE HIMSELF OR HIS PLAYERS

Saturday, the Chicago White Sox blew a lead against the Detroit Tigers, giving up 12 unanswered runs. Afterwards, Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen went into a CLASSIC tirade.

Guillen was furious at his players who were watching college football on the White Sox clubhouse tv monitors following a double-digit loss. That led to this outburst:

”It’s not because we’re out of the pennant. I’ve been dealing with this for how many months — six months? Dealing with this for the next two, three days, five six or whatever is left, I’m not going to tolerate. If they think the season is over for them, yes. If they think the season is over for me, no.

”And I’m going to make it clear. It’s a bunch of [expletive] out there watching football games like a piece of [expletive] with no pride the way they play the [expletive] game, and that’s embarrassing. If you don’t have pride to play this game and you don’t care about it, get another job because I know I’m going to be all over the stinking place when I talk about this.

”I’m not in a pennant race, but at least I have some pride and at least I have something to fight for and at least I have something to show up to this ballpark and play [for]. And when you go out there and you turn your TV on and watch stupid [expletive] football when those [expletive] football players don’t give a [expletive] about you, that’s embarrassing. We’ve got how many games? Seven games they’ve got to put their [expletive] together.

”I don’t mind losing games. That’s part of the game. But when you lose games and you don’t even care about it, we’re going to have problems. I run this ballclub, and I’m going to run this ballclub the way I want to. If they don’t want me here, I’ll get another job, or get me other players. But getting your ass kicked like that, then all of a sudden you’re watching football games, that’s a bunch of [expletive].”

OZZIE GUILLEN DELIVERS ALL-TIME CLASSIC TIRADE: ACCUSES TEAM OF “STEALING MONEY”

OZZIE GUILLEN GOES NUTS SATURDAY AGAINST THE YANKEES

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is spectacularly awesome. Following his team’s embarrassing 10-0 loss at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, Guillen went off in front of the New York media. Guillen’s tirade is an all-time classic. It was better than any NFL outburst you can think of including Jim Mora sputtering “Playoffs!!!??!!” or Dennis Green pounding his fist and shouting, “The Bears are who we thought they are!”

The transcript of Guillen’s tirade was printed in the Chicago Tribune:  HERE

Guillen was furious that the White Sox fell to third place and had more errors than hits against the Yankees. Chicago managed only one hit against reject pitchers Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin. Both of those veteran pitchers began the season in the minors and have been released within the past year.

Guillen launched into his verbal assault by saying he was “embarrassed.” Among the rest of the highlights of Guillen’s tirade:

* Everybody on the White Sox should be “embarrassed”

* Anyone who wasn’t embarrassed has the “wrong job”

* Guillen also accused his team (and himself) of “stealing money” from White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf

* Guillen also pointed out that he was watching a Little League game Saturday morning and those players “were playing better”

* That’s why Little League games are “more fun” to watch than the White Sox

* The White Sox have built themselves a steep “mountain” to climb. Guillen suggested his team doesn’t have the guts to “climb to the top” of that mountain. He sarcastically suggested they need “a cable car”

* His team is “full of s***”

* Guillen concluded that he wanted to blame himself  “100%” for the White Sox recent failures but he needed “some reason” to shift the blame away from the players. Based on their pathetic performance Saturday, Guillen said he wanted to fight for his players but, “Give me some bullets to fight for you guys.”

The White Sox have now fallen to under .500 at 64-66. They are now a full five game behind Detroit in the A.L. Central division standings. They also now trail Minnesota. That’s actually the good news. As far as the Wild Card goes, Chicago is in sixth place. They are currently eleven-and-a-half games out and would need to jump five other teams to get into the playoffs via the Wild Card. That would seem impossible.

Ozzie Guillen wants to fight for his players. He just doesn’t have any ammunition.

DAVID WELLS JUST SAID NO

DAVID WELLS GIVES THUMBS UP WHILE ENJOYING A BALLGAME AT THE NEW YANKEE STADIUM

Believe or not there is a vice that former New York Yankees pitcher David Wells once turned down. Wells says that he passed on a chance to use performance enhancing drugs when he was a teammate of Jose Canseco’s with the Chicago White Sox in 2001.

Wells said Canseco offered to get the portly pitcher HGH to help him come back from an injury-plagued 5-7 season. Instead, Wells simply trained harder and “quit drinking beer” to drop 30 pounds in Spring Training 2002.

Now a broadcaster for TBS, Wells has no sympathy for baseball players who use illegal drugs. He is on record as saying baseball players who use performance enhancing drugs should be kicked out of the game, not merely suspended for 50 games. Wells points out,

“Did Pete Rose get a second chance? Did Shoeless Joe Jackson get a second chance?”
