UFC to get into New York the old fashioned way: bribing politicians

March 11, 2011

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has been trying for years to be licensed in the state of New York. They have tried repeatedly to get the New York State Assembly to legalize MMA fighting in general and the UFC in particular. The UFC has been met by failure after failure in these attempts.

Now UFC president Dana White is more hopeful than ever about getting his sport approved in New York. The reason? Zuffa, UFC’s parent company, donated $75,000 to New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s election campaign.

White recently whined to the Chicago Sun-Times that, “We’ve gone into other countries faster than we’ve gotten to New York.” The UFC has held events in Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Ireland and Dubai.

DANA WHITE FREAKS OVER REPORT THAT HE’D SELL PART OF HIS UFC INTEREST

DANA WHITE

UFC President Dana White is furious. He tells Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that he is definitely NOT selling any of his shares in the company. White claims an interview he did with Greg Miles of Blomberg News was taken out of context.

Nevertheless, Blomberg has video of White discussing under what conditions UFC would be willing to sell part of their ownership to new investors.

White claims that he and fellow UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta are “young” and “don’t need the money.” Except that the Fertittas DO need the money. Their casino empire not only filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, but had no deal in place with creditors and is $5.75 billion in debt. There was a contentious court hearing just last month with some of the Fertittas’ creditors.

COUTURE/LESNAR MATCH TRIGGERS DANA WHITE/TODD DUBOEF DUST UP

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports has a great piece today which features a classic boxing versus UFC contest.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times Tuesday, Top Rank Boxing president Todd duBoef blasted the entire sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as being unsafe. DuBoef based his accusation on the ending of Saturday’s Brock Lesnar/Randy Couture fight where Couture was repeatedly struck in the face.

DuBoef called UFC (the world’s top MMA organization) “nothing more than a tough man contest.” DuBoef’s contention is anecdotal. Studies have concluded that boxing is far more dangerous than MMA. UFC was founded in 1993. Since then, there have been two deaths of MMA fighters (one in an unsanctioned match in Ukraine.) In that same time 71 boxers have died in the ring. In fact, there have been more deaths in fights promoted by Top Rank (duBoef’s company) than in the entire history of MMA.

DANA WHITE: K.O.’S TOP RANK

UFC president Dana White yesterday pounced on duBoef’s accusations. He ripped duBoef’s boss, boxing promoter Bob Arum saying,

“Bob Arum is 95 years old and senile.”

White also says he has a study from Johns Hopkins university that PROVES MMA is safer than boxing. As Iole’s article points out, there is such a study. Published in The Journal of Sports Medicine, the study makes several references to the “fact” that MMA is safer than boxing with fewer traumatic head injuries.
