THE FLAMING LIPS MEET THE OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE (WITH COMMIE SHIRT)

First the Oklahoma legislature made a controversy out of evolution, now the big topic of debate  in the Sooner state is rock and roll. Specifically, is the new “official” state rock song too communist. Seriously.

The latest Oklahoma political controversy started after the song “Do You Realize??” was named the Official Rock Song of Oklahoma in an online vote by state residents. The Oklahoma Senate passed a unanimous resolution honoring the band. Then, last week, one member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives objected to honoring the band because bassist Michael Ivins had worn a red t-shirt with a yellow hammer-and-sickle on it on the steps of the Oklahoma capitol.

Not only was the band full of obvious communists, but state Rep. Corey Holland pointed out that some lyrics of the Flaming Lips rock songs shockingly had obscene words in them. Also, band members had sworn in public once when Oklahoma City had named an alley after the band. The controversy was enough for the Oklahoma House to NOT pass a resolution honoring the band.

Fortunately, Oklahoma governor Brad Henry signed a resolution approving “Do You Realize??” as the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma anyway. The band’s lead singer, Wayne Coyne, called the governor “very cool.” He also pointed out that Ivins’ offensive shirt was a just a Christmas gift and had no real political significance and that he himself was offended that the band was called un-American.
