THE CHARLIE WEIS/JIMMY CLAUSEN ERA HAS BEEN A BLACK EYE FOR NOTRE DAME FAITHFUL

Media reports indicate that Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis has already cleared out his office in anticipation of being fired. The Fighting Irish finished the 2009 regular season 6-6 following a 45-38 loss to Stanford Saturday night. Stanford tailback Toby Gerhart ran roughshod over a pathetic Irish defense with 205 yards and three touchdowns.

Speculation has already started over who will replace Weis at Notre Dame.

JIMMY CLAUSEN: YOUNG QUARTERBACK, VETERAN DRINKER

In what could be the final week of the Charlie Weis era, Notre Dame’s disappointing college football season appears to be coming to a controversial ending. Apparently, an irate Notre Dame fan struck Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the face outside a South Bend bar early Saturday night/Sunday morning following the team’s loss to Connecticut. Clausen reportedly suffered a black eye in the incident which police say happened at 2 a.m. According to ESPN, Claussen was “sucker-punched” after having dinner with his parents. The Chicago Tribune interviewed a bartender who claims Clausen was inside the bar with family members following the loss to Connecticut.

It was Clausen’s third public incident involving drinking or in a bar, the first since he turned 21. The quarterback was cited on an alcohol charge in 2007 as a minor. He was also photographed participating in the “Beer Olympics” in 2008. Those pictures appeared on the website The Big Lead.

NOTRE DAME COACH CHARLIE WEIS AND HIS BELEAGURED YOUNG QUARTERBACK JIMMY CLAUSEN

Monday’s edition of the USA Today has a feature on Notre Dame football. Nothing new there. The Fighting Irish have been getting national pub for the better part of a century.

What is new is that Notre Dame’s football program is on the brink. The Fighting Irish were a ridiculous 3-9 in 2007 and just 7-6 last year. Coach Charlie Weis may actually find himself getting fired which is unbelievable since he still has six years left on a $40 million contract extension that pays him through 2015. Weis was given a ten-year deal after barely completing half a season in South Bend. His career winning percentage of .580 is actually WORSE than the two underachieving Irish coaches before him, Bob Davey and Ty Willingham.

Still, Notre Dame is currently ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason coaches poll. And, as their last National Championship coach-turned ESPN analyst, Lou Holts, points out they will be favored in every game they play this season “except USC.”

Today’s USA Today article (and many others) point out the key to Notre Dame’s success will be now-junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Clausen has had an up and down college career. He was pummeled and battered behind an horrific offensive line his freshman season. Opposing teams sacked Clausen a record 34 times, the worst in Notre Dame history. Last year he recovered to throw for 3,172 yards and 25 touchdowns with an impressive quarterback ranking of 132.5. Clausen also threw for 406 yards and five touchdowns in Notre Dame’s 49-21 victory in the Hawaii Bowl. Both were school records in the long history of Notre Dame football and ended the team’s nine game losing streak in bowl games.

Clausen is on record as saying, “Coach Weis will not get fired because of me.”
