Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s toughest opponent: 80-year-old Larry Merchant

September 19, 2011

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an ass clown. After spending his entire career ducking quality fighters in general, and Manny Pacquiao in particular, the boxer finally found someone he was comfortable taking on. HBO’s 80-year-old boxing announcer, Larry Merchant.

Mayweather Jr. won Saturday night’s controversial fight against Victor Ortiz with an amazingly cheap (but arguably legal) shot. The fight was stopped in the 4th round following a head butt by Ortiz. After the stoppage, Ortiz came up to apologize to Mayweather, literally hugging and kissing him. After the bell rang to resume action, Ortiz tried to hug Mayweather Jr. again. He responded by knocking Ortiz’s ass out. The shot came so quickly that the referee wasn’t even looking. He literally never saw the shot that knocked Ortiz out. It was one of the most controversial ending to a major fight in years.

In the post-fight interview, Merchant asks Mayweather Jr. about the controversial ending. Mayweather rightly points out that fighters need to be ready “at all times.” Besides, the fight was only stopped because of poor sportsmanship by Ortiz. Mayweather then abruptly breaks off the interview telling Merchant, “You never give me a fair shake.”

The interview digresses from there with Mayweather Jr. screaming that HBO should fire Merchant. It climaxes with Merchant yelling, “If I was 50 years younger I’d kick your ass!”

BLOG CALLS LARRY MERCHANT “A DRUNK ASSCLOWN WHO SHOULD BE BANNED FROM TELEVISION”

LARRY MERCHANT

Who knows what HBO announcer Larry Merchant ever did to writer Joshua Stein, but it must have been SOMETHING. In a post for Gawker.com Sunday, Stein wrote one of the most scathing attack pieces in the history of media reviews. The post was austensibly a review of Merchant’s performance in Saturday’s Manny Pacquiao/Ricky Hatton fight. It was really just a setup to blast Merchant.

Stein titled his piece, “Larry Merchant Is A Drunk Assclown Who Should Be Banned From Television.”

Ouch!

Stein went on to write,

“If anyone watched the Hatton v. Pacquio fight last night, the biggest loser wasn’t Ricky Hatton. It was Larry Merchant, the lipid eyed drunkard whose inane commentary damages more brains than Pacquio’s right hook.”

That seems objective. Stein further goes on to call Merchant a “tuxedoed stooge,” “boxing’s old joke,” and a “drunk a**hole.”

Granted, bloggers are becoming more and more vicious and profane in their attacks lately. (Erick Erickson of redstate.com recently called retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter “a goat f—ing child molester”) Still, the attack on Merchant didn’t come from some guy blogging out of his mother’s basement. Gawker is one of the largest new media companies in the world. If there is such a thing as “corporate blogging,” it’s Gawker. The company owns the sites Gawker.com, Deadspin.com and Defamer.com.

Stein also dug up a host of YouTube clips over the years of Merchant embarrassing himself. It’s ridiculous to assert or even imply that Larry Merchant is drunk on-the-air with HBO. However, he is 79-years-old. HBO has brought in Max Kellerman to pick up some of the load from Merchant but, since they’re only doing THREE pay-per-view events this year, it begs the question. Isn’t Larry Merchant semi-retired already?
