 JEFF PEARLMAN

Everybody hates Mike Lupica. Even, it turns out, his fellow sportswriters.

Jeff Pearlman is a longtime writer for Sports Illustrated and various other publications. Recently he has turned his focus to writing books. This weekend Pearlman was a panelist on the “Blogs With Balls” appearance in New York. During that panel he ripped New York Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica.

Pearlman wrote about trashing Lupica on his blog. Pearlman lambasted Lupica for his “galling arrogance.” He also went on to describe how Lupica “irks the hell out of me.” Pearlman blasted Lupica’s ego and need to become a celebrity. He also called Lupica “a man who needs to be recognized” and chastized the columnist for the way he treats other people (a complaint that has been made often by others like Jason Whitlock in the past.)

Pearlman concludes his rant against Lupica by noting,

“…perspective is a funny thing. Once lost, it’s awfully hard to retain. One day, when Mike Lupica no longer has a job…when ESPN stops calling and the Daily News folds, I believe he’ll find it. Until then-wake up, bud. Wake up.”

Pearlman’s criticisms of Lupica are probably all valid. They jibe with everything that’s ever been uttered and written about the guy. Unfortunately, a funny thing happened. After blasting Lupica for HIS ego, Pearlman went to the sportsjournalists.com website to read the reactions about HIMSELF. As it turns out, the reaction by Pearlman’s peers wasn’t exactly favorable.

The entire sportsjournalists.com forum section was basically filled with pot-calling-the-kettle analogies about what an egomaniac Pearlman is. A petulant Pearlman immediately removed the Lupica posting from his blog with a lame explanation. Most of the post can still be read on the Baseball Think Factory website, but Pearlman whined about being “a bit hurt” and tried to justify his removing the Lupica tirade.

Pearlman noted,

“If I’ve become arrogant or dismissive to anyone reading this blog, I truly apologize. Maybe, in the act of jabbing Mike Lupica, I’ve actually become Mike Lupica. If so, it’s not the way I want to live. I took the Lupica post down.”

AIG IS SO EVIL EVEN MIKE LUPICA CAN MAKE FUN OF THEM

It’s not very often that New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica writes about a topic that’s not sports related. It’s also not very often that Lupica is right. Today, both of those things happened.

Lupica took the layup and penned his column today about the $450 million in bonuses payed out by failing insurance giant AIG. Obviously, it’s outrageous and indefensible that AIG rewarded its incompetent executives to such a degree after taking $170 billion dollars in government/taxpayer bailout money. It’s probably even obscene. Lupica had a unique take on the scandal.

Just because they’re “too big to fail” doesn’t mean AIG workers aren’t too lazy. Lupica actually went to the AIG building in downtown Manhattan and found that not a single AIG worker in the entire company was at work on Sunday. Not ONE single worker in the entire 66 floor building.
