Today is the 40th anniversary of man first landing and walking on the moon.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” It was one of the most monumental technical achievements in the history of man.

Yet, according to the latest Gallup poll, more than 30 million Americans believe either that the Apollo moon landing was fake or might have been faked.

The conspiracy theorists were so pervasive that the television show MythBusters actually felt compelled to run a “Did-we-really-go-to-the-moon?” episode on the Discovery Channel. The MythBusters disproved virtually every conspiracy theory (including showing how a flag really can wave in a vacuum.)

There are also photos of the moon landing site that were taken by telescope.

Not that it was necessary to “prove” that man landed on the moon. After all, there were over one million people who personally witnessed the launch where Apollo 11 blasted into space. There are also 12 astronauts who actually walked on the moon. More than 40,000 people worked on the moon landing projects for NASA. A Purdue University professor studied the phenomenon of why people believe the moon landing is fake. He concluded that it would be harder to fake a conspiracy and get all of those people to stay quiet about it than it would be to actually land on the moon.

Why do people believe the moon landing was faked? The old Art Bell radio show put on a guy who originally had made the claim. He was trying to sell a self-published book. Fox then ran a tv special suggesting the moon landing was faked. Also, people seem to cloud in their minds fiction with real life events over the years. The movie Capricorn One was made in 1978. It’s about “The Government” faking a manned flight to Mars by filming the entire incident. (It’s also one of your finer O.J. Simpson movies.)

Conspiracy theorists point to the fact that NASA lost or erased every tape of the Apollo 11 mission as “proof” of a faked moon landing. It actually only proves government incompetence. NASA employees claim they recorded over the tapes through the years to “save money.” Nevertheless, there are still tapes of the Apollo 11 landing taken by network tv feeds and the relay station in Australia that fed the video signal back to NASA. Another thing the conspiracy theorists don’t mention is the fact that there actually ARE tapes of Apollo 12, Apollo 13, Apollo 14, Apollo 15 and Apollo 16.

So, enough with the lunacy. Literally.
