IS RANDY COUTURE RETIRED OR NOT?

December 19, 2010

Earlier this week, UFC/MMA legend Randy Couture shocked the world with announcements on his Twitter and Facebook pages indicating that he may be retired. The 47-year-old, three-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Tweeted, “I think I’m at the end of it all y’all. It’s time.”

On his Facebook page, Couture added, “It’s time to move on and focus on all the other amazing things going on in my life.”

However, Couture’s reps were quick to issue a denial of Couture’s retirement saying any “official” announcement would come through the UFC.

Couture recently co-starred in the summer movie smash “The Expendables.” He has several other movie roles line up including Expendables 2 and recently filmed a series of Ford commercials.

TONEY SETS BOXING BACK ANOTHER 50 YEARS

August 30, 2010

The results for UFC 118 were just as we had predicted. Boxer James Toney exited The Octagon as a disgraced fat man. It took Randy Couture less than one round to finish off Toney who landed exactly ZERO punches in the fight. One media outlet described Toney as perfectly playing the role of the “fat fool.”

Frankie Edgar defeated BJ Penn yet again to solidify his UFC lightweight title. Other winners on the UFC 118 card included Nate Diaz and Greg Maynard who beat Kenny Florian.

UFC 109 take place at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas tomorow. The headline matchup features Ultimate Fighting legend Randy Couture taking on UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman. Couture and Coleman are a combined 91-years-old. Still, interest in UFC 109 is extremely high.

The main undercard to the Couture/Coleman fight has Nate Marquardt taking on Chael Sonnen. Sonnen is one of the most interesting and colorful personalities in the UFC. He is a former state legislator from Oregon. The winner of Marquardt/Sonnen will get a title shot against Anderson Silva.

Other fights on the UFC 109 card include veteran Frank Trigg taking on former UFC champion Matt Serra, a welterweight match between Mike Swick and Paulo Thiago, and former King of the Cage champion Mac Danzig battling former ICON champ Justin Buchholz.

COUTURE VICTORIOUS AT UFC 105

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture

RANDY COUTURE

Randy Couture made a successful return to the light heavyweight division Saturday with a unanimous decision over Brandon Vera at UFC 105. Vera appeared stunned and near tears when the decision was announced following a slow-paced non-title main event that was held in Manchester, England. With the victory, Couture’s fighting career is still going strong at the age of 46.

The Couture decision was not without controversy. He was knocked down by Vera in the second round and although all three judges at ringside scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Couture, Michael David Smith of Fanhouse had the score 30-27 for Vera. Vera maintained that he “controlled” the fight. Others disagreed. Following the match, Vera sarcastically said, “Thanks, judges.”

In the card’s co-main event, Dan Hardy earned a title shot against Georges St. Pierre with a victory over Mike Swick. British fighter Michael Bisping was also a winner on a card that was actually televised for free on Spike TV.

RANDY COUTURE

Brandon Vera takes on UFC legend Randy Couture Saturday night in UFC 105 at the M.E.N. arena in Manchester, England. Other fighters on the card include Mike Swick and Great Britain’s Michael Bisping.

At age 46, Couture is dropping down to light heavyweight. He will fight Saturday at 205 pounds. Couture is coming off back-to-back UFC losses against Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira following his winning the heavyweight championship in 2007. Couture reigned as UFC heavyweight champion at the age of 45 after winning the belt with a knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga.

This is a rare evening where UFC is going head-to-head with boxing for viewers. Also, each sport (Couture for UFC and Manny Pacquiao for boxing) is featuring arguably its biggest draw in attempt to chase viewers. What UFC will NOT do this time is go head-to-head with Pacquiao for pay-per-view dollars. UFC is putting Saturday night’s event on free tv. UFC 105 starts live at 5 pm Eastern on the cable station Spike TV.

NOGUEIRA  OUTLASTS RANDY COUTURE AT UFC 102

Randy Couture lost but he sure didn’t look like a 46-year-old at UFC 102 Saturday. Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Norueira fought to a decision. A decision that was awarded to Nogueira despite hometown judges in Portland that may have been looking to give Couture a victory. Despite Couture’s being knocked down a couple of times, some are already dubbing the Couture/Nogueira match a “classic.” Two of the judges had Nogueira eeking out a 29-28 victory although the fight ended up being a unanimous decision. Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports points out that Couture went “toe-to-toe” with Nogueira.

In other action Saturday, Nate Marquardt and Brandon Vera were both winners on the UFC 102 card. Also, Jake Rosholt choked out Chris Leben for the upset win. Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine suffered a disappointing knockout against Thiago Silva in the evening’s co-main event.

UFC 102 took place in Portland, Oregon. Oregon is the state that Randy Couture resided in for 13 years.

Former UFC champion Randy Couture has always been popular with the fans. What’s amazing is he is still a competitive fighter at 46-years-old. Couture takes on heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Saturday night in Portland, Oregon at UFC 102. Couture is a former Oregon resident.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports describes Couture as “ageless.” The Couture/Noguiera match highlights another deep UFC lineup. Other fights at UFC 102 include Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine taking on Thiago Silva and veteran Nate Marquardt battling undefeated Demian Maia. The winner of the Marquardt/Maia bout is rumored to be in line for a middleweight title match against Anderson Silva in 2010 following Dan Henderson’s shot at the belt.

Chris Leben, Brandon Vera and former heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga are also on the UFC 102 card.
