NATIONAL TELEVISION BLACK EYE FOR MMA

April 18, 2010

Well, at least Jason “Mayhem” Miller lived up to his nickname.

Saturday’s Strikeforce event was a rare chance to bring Mixed Martial Arts fighting to a national audience-the event was televised live on CBS. Unfortunately, it is more likely to be remembered for the idiotic post-fight melee than any fighting action that took place. Following Jake Shields’ surprising victory over Dan Henderson, Miller, the host of┬áMTV’s “Bully Beatdown,” entered the ring and challenged Shields to a rematch. (Shields had defeated Miller in their previous matchup.)

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Mendez attacked Miller. Veteran UFC fighter Nate Diaz and his brother, Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz, also joined the now out of control melee. The “mayhem” was so bad that CBS annoucer Gus Johnson implored for order to be restored, at one point shouting, “Gentlemen, we’re on national television!”

Also, the tv ratings for the entire Strikeforce event were down 31% compared to last November’s card on CBS.
