A pair of sumo wrestlers have tested positive for marijuana use according to the Japan Sumo Association’s anti-doping panel.

69 Japanese sumos were ordered to undergo drug testing after a Russian wrestler was given a lifetime ban for being arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana. Both of the wrestlers who tested positive for marijuana were also Russian.

According to the International Herald Tribune, “Sumo culture is conservative and its wrestlers are generally held to a high moral standard.” Not only do the wrestlers who tested positive for pot face supension, but they can also be deported or given lengthy prison sentences.

Under Japan’s “Cannabis Control Law” the mere possession of marijuana is punishable by up to five years in prison. The Herald Tribune article says, “Foreigners convicted of drug crimes can also be deported and given a lifetime re-entry ban.”
