November 13, 2009

SPORTSbyBROOKS spotted this article from the AP where University of Idaho athletic director Rob Spears refused to board a Horizon Air flight from Moscow, Idaho to Boise last Saturday after he discovered the plane was painted with a Boise State University logo. Spears had to drive 90 miles to Spokane, Washington to catch another flight to a Boise fundraiser.

Spears says he will not fly the Bronco plane until Horizon paints an Idaho logo on one of its planes.

WORST TEAMS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL

July 26, 2009

2008 was a terrible year for the University of Idaho. Apparently, this year is going to be worse.

Rivals.com has ranked every team in college football from number 1 through 120. My alma mater, the University of Idaho, is currently rated the second-worst team in all of college football. Actually, they may be the worst.

North Texas is the only team ranked lower than Idaho and Rivals says they have at least two “winnable” non-conference games at home this season. In fact, Rivals.com predicts “a four or five win season should be the goal” of North Texas.

Not the Idaho Vandals. They stink. Idaho is 3-21 in two seasons under coach Robb Akey. The Vandals were 2-12 last season. That was actually a slight improvement over 2007, when the football team went 1-11.

And you thought 2008 was a bad year for U of I politicians like Larry Craig and Sarah Palin. Palin, like the disgraced senator, went to college at the University of Idaho.

2008 WAS A BAD YEAR FOR IDAHO ALUM AND U.S. SENATOR LARRY CRAIG. BESIDES THE WHOLE GAY-SEX-IN-A-BATHROOM THING, HE ALSO HAD HIS PICTURE ACCIDENTALLY PRINTED ON HIS OPPONENT’S CAMPAIGN BUTTON

As bad as the Idaho football team was last season, the team still managed to make national news on two occasions. Unfortunately, neither time had anything to do with the actual football being played on the field.

First, the Vandals were embroiled in the dumbest controversy in the history of the school. Idaho administrators received complaints that their cheerleaders uniforms were showing too much skin. The school actually ORDERED the cheerleaders to cover up, making Moscow, Idaho a national laughingstock.

The move was so idiotic that Darren Rovell of CNBC said it probably ended up costing the school money. In a nationwide poll by NBC 86% of the people responding said the school made the “wrong decision” in covering up their cheerleaders. The Vandals lost their opener 70-0 to Arizona and there were actually STUDENTS complaining that the cheerleaders weren’t wearing enough clothes.

In a seperate senseless sartorial calamity, Idaho had to return all of the football team’s uniforms to Nike. It seems the “racy” new design that was approved by the school turned out to be a fashion faux pas. Both the “I” in Idaho and the word “Vandals” were arranged so that they appeared on the players butt cracks.

Once again, the University of Idaho was a national disgrace. Embarrassed school officials were forced were forced to ship the jerseys back. That’s what you get for trying to make your player jerseys more racy while you COVER UP your cheerleaders! It was the defining moment of a ridiculously bad season.

Apparently, this year is going to be worse. I can hardly wait.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ARRESTED FOR DUI

VANDALS ASSISTANT COACH MARK CRINER

University of Idaho defensive coordinator Mark Criner has been arrested on DUI charges. Criner’s defense finished 116th in the country last year. There’s not much to do in Moscow, Idaho other than drink. The University of Idaho made Playboy’s annual list of party schools again this year. Idaho also finished #4 in the entire nation on a list of  “Top 10 Schools Where Students Never Study.”

There was a time, back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, (when the Idaho drinking age was 19) that the Moscow, Idaho/Pullman, Washington area actually drank more.

MR. IRRELEVANT TO START FOR RAMS THIS WEEKEND

DAVID VOBORA: “MR. IRRELEVANT”

David Vobora, the last player taken in the 2008 NFL Draft, will start at middle linebacker for the St. Louis Rams this Sunday against Miami. He has spent most of the season on the Rams’ practice squad, but has now worked his way up into the St. Louis starting lineup. Vobora was the 252nd (and final) player taken this year out of the University of Idaho.

For that distinction, Vobora was awarded with the annual “Lowsman Trophy” award and was proclaimed the 33rd “Mr. Irrelevant.” Vobora is the first “Mr. Irrelevant” to start an NFL game in his rookie season since 1994. Newport Beach, CA in Orange County makes a BIG deal about the “Mr. Irrelevant” award every year. They have an entire week based around it. Vobora was given a parade and even got to go to Disneyland.

TWO-PIECE CHEERLEADER OUTFITS TOO CONTROVERSIAL FOR IDAHO

September 18, 2008

IDAHO CHEERLEADERS: BEFORE

IDAHO CHEERLEADERS: AFTER

The college football season is only a few weeks old and the University of Idaho has already suffered its second wardrobe malfunction. (This follows the dreaded “I-on-the-ass” controversy.)

After complaints that their cheerleader uniforms were showing a bit too much skin, the Vandals have switched from two-piece cheerleader outfits to more “conservative” attire.

IDAHO FOOTBALL TEAM REMOVES “I” LOGO FROM TEAM’S ASSES

September 6, 2008

The University of Idaho (Sarah Palin’s alma mater) was embarrassed in their 2008 football opener 70-0 by Arizona. Worse, the school was taunted over the new uniform design of their pants.

The pants featured an “I” and the word “Vandals” printed across the butt. The logo was sponsored by Nike which gave the school its first endorsement deal in history.

The Vandals may still suck, but at least the logos have been removed from the players butts. School officials have agreed to change the uniforms after complaints from the players.
