LONG-HAIRED LAKERS EUROWEENIE SASHA VUJACIC: IF HE ONLY HAD A BRAIN
Imagine how mad Los Angeles Lakers basketball coach Phil Jackson would be if his team DIDN’T have the NBA’s best record (tied with Cleveland.)
This weekend Jackson took shots at a pair of his Laker players, both of them Europeans. First, Jackson slammed backup guard Sasha Vujacic. Jackson called Vujacic a player who depends on emotion and often plays “by the seat of his pants.” Jackson then let loose this gem about his Slovenian shooting guard,
“He just doesn’t have a brain.”
Like many Europeans, Vujacic’s game is primarily away from the basket. He is a shooter. This year Vujacic’s scoring average, field goal percentage and three point shooting are all down. If he’s not hitting his outside shot, Vujacic is of little value to the Lakers or Jackson. Last year Vujacic was an exciting player who scored points in bunches. He had multiple games of 20 or more points. This year he has not had 20 points in a single game and has scored more than 15 just once. Although he’s warmed up slightly in recent games, Vujacic went the first 29 games of the Lakers season scoring more than 10 points just once. He seems more interested in making a fashion statement than having an impact on the court where he seems tentative.
At least Vujacic had some value to the Lakers last year. Jackson was even harder in his criticism of starting forward Vladimir Radmanovic. Listening to Jackson, Radmanovic has virtually no value to the Lakers. In fact, Jackson flat out stated the 6-10 Serbian,
“…hasn’t merited starting; there’s no doubt about it.”
Jackson says Radmanovic is in the lineup simply because with the team’s other forwards, Luke Walton and Lamar Odom, out with injuries, he has no choice other than to play Radmanovic.
