THE UFC IS MORE POPULAR THAN BOXING – IN PHILLY

MUCH LIKE THE ROCKY BALBOA STATUE, BOXING HAS BEEN DISPLACED IN PHILADELPHIA

How popular is UFC?

So popular that the Wall Street Journal points out that the first ever Ultimate Fighting event in Philadelphia will have a higher gross than any boxing card in the history of the city.

Think about that. Philadelphia likes to bill itself as “The Boxing Capital of the World.” It’s Joe Frazier’s hometown. A Jack Dempsey/Gene Tunney fight once drew a crowd of 120,000 people there. Even the fictional Rocky Balboa/Apollo Creed fight was held in Philly. Hell, the freakin’ Rocky Balboa statue was displayed there.

Yet, the ONE event that UFC has ever held in Philadelphia will outgross every boxing match ever held in the history of the city. In fact, tomorrow’s UFC 101 will do a higher gate than any boxing card in the entire history of the state of Pennsylvania. Those figures come from the Wall Street Journal (who knows a little something about business.)

As for the UFC 101 card itself, Saturday’s event features BJ Penn taking on Kenny Florian to defend his lightweight title. Middleweight champion Anderson Silva will also fight. He is moving up to 205  pounds to take on Forrset Griffin.
