JAY CUTLER
The only thing missing is the mustache. That was the assessment of Baltimore Sun writer Kevin Van Valkenburg in comparing beleagured Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler to the much-maligned, overhyped qb of a previous generation, Jeff George. In fact, the resemblance is so uncanny that Van Valkenburg accused Cutler of being George’s “lovechild.”
Cutler has had an epically bad season with the Chicago Bears. Sunday, he completed just 10 of 27 passes and threw three more picks in the Bears 31-7 loss to Baltimore. Cutler’s quarterback ranking for the game was 7.9 out of a possible 153. Worse, he has 25 interceptions on the season and the Bears are now 5-9. Cutler has been singlehandedly to blame for a number of those Bears losses.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The plan was for Cutler to revive a stodgy Bears offense and lead the team to glory after being acquired from the Denver Broncos this offseason. Instead, Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is looking like a genius for showing Cutler the door.
Cutler’s play for the Bears has been in a word moronic with stupid play after stupid play. As his turnovers mount, the Chicago media has joined the Cutler bashfest. The Chicago Tribune picked up on the Cutler-as-the-spawn-of-Jeff-George theme today and ran with it. They listed the ways in which Cutler and George were identical:
1. Both Jay Cutler and Jeff George hail from Indiana
2. both have strong arms
3. both are knuckle-headed
5. Cutler and George are both “franchise killers”
The Chicago article concurs with the Baltimore Sun assessment-Cutler, like George before him,”is either the worst good quarterback of his generation, or the best bad quarterback of his generation.”
At the start of the season, many experts were predicting Cutler would lead the Bears to the NFC North title. Now, Cutler has been so awful that people are going back and ridiculing his time in Denver.
