GIFFORD NIELSEN

Gifford Nielsen, who has been a television sports anchor at KHOU for almost 25 years, is being let go by channel 11 Houston. The station also layed off two producers.

Nielsen was a star quarterback at BYU and played quarterback for six years in the NFL with the Houston Oilers. The highlight of Nielsen’s NFL career came in 1979 when he led the Oilers to a playoff victory of the heavily favored San Diego Chargers. The Oilers won that game despite injuries to starting qb Dan Pastorini and Hall-of-Fame running back Earl Campbell.

In 1981, Nielsen threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame after his All-American career at Brigham Young University.

Nielsen had worked at the same Houston tv station for nearly 25 years.

For the second year in a row, pictures of Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum partying on an injured knee have appeared on the internet. Bynum was recently photographed partying at the Playboy Mansion. Bynum is pictured carrying a Playboy centerfold on his shoulders. Bynum is hilariously described as wearing a “smoking jacket and slippers” at his Playboy appearance.

Last year Bynum’s attending of a UCLA frat party while injured received a lot of attention. He was reportedly “dancing all night” despite a different knee injury that year.

In an interview with the New York Times today, the cable television network MTV announced it is going back to its roots and will start playing music videos again. On the other hand, the “AMTV” block will only run only six hours a day from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Mondays-Thursdays.

ESPN is reporting that Memphis basketball coach John Calipari met with University of Kentucky officials over the weekend and is considering an offer to become the school’s next coach.

Andy Katz is reporting that the Kentucky offer to Calipari is  a “multiyear, multimillion offer.”
