MANNY PACQUIAO PUT TIMOTHY BRADLEY IN A WHEELCHAIR SATURDAY-BUT WAS DEEMED THE LOSER OF THE FIGHT

It may turn out to be one of the most controversial decisions in boxing history. Saturday night at the MGM Grand hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Manny Pacquiao lost a split decision to Timothy Bradley for the WBO Welterweight title. As ESPN put it, it was the boxing judges who “shocked the world.” Pacquiao lost the decision despite landing almost 100 more punches 253-159 (according to CompuBox.) Pacquaio also landed the harder punches and was the fight’s aggressor throwing far more blows and landing more in ten of the 12 rounds.

Pacquiao had not lost a fight since 2005. That’s a remarkable seven-year winning streak. However, many veteran boxing journalists who were ringside were shocked by the decision. Dan Rafael of ESPN flat out stated that Bradley “did not win this fight.” Rafael says he actually had the fight scored 11 rounds to 1 in favor of Pacquiao. Veteran tv ring announcer Harold Lederman also scored the fight 11 rounds to one for Pacquiao. The Associated Press had Manny Pacquiao winning the fight 117-111.

None of that mattered to the judges. Las Vegas boxing writer Kevin Iole called the decision of a Bradley win “a joke” but argues it may actually be good for boxing. Pacquiao nemesis Floyd Mayweather Jr. missed the fight. He’s serving time in jail on domestic violence charges.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum, who’s committed his share of boxing ethical atrocities, proclaimed himself to be “ashamed” of the sport and the decision, yet stands to benefit financially from a Pacquiao/Bradley rematch.

ARUM SQUELCHES PACQUIAO RETIREMENT RUMORS

MANNY PACQUIAO

Promoter Bob Arum told boxingscene.com that superstar fighter Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring at least six more times and won’t retire until 2013.

Pacquiao fights Shane Mosley in March and is expected to fight again in September or October of 2011. After that, Arum says Pacquiao will fight two times in 2012 and twice more in 2013. Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather continues to duck Pacquiao.

MANNY PACQUIAO BLOODIES ANTONIO MARGARITO

Sports Illustrated called it a “dominating performance.” Pound-for-pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao picked up his record EIGHTH world championship with a unanimous decision over Antonio Margarito Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

Margarito was lucky to even get the match after disgracefully cheating in a match against Shane Mosley in January of 2009. Pacquiao’s camp even accused Margarito of cheating before this fight after apparently finding a banned supplement in his dressing room.

However, even though he was smaller and lighter, Pacquiao pummeled and battered Margarito. Pac-Man won round after round and turned Margarito’s face into a bloody mess.

November 5, 2010

Did boxer Manny Pacquiao make Nevada Senator Harry Reid a pound-for-pound political champion?

Pacquiao is claiming sole credit for Reid’s Senate victory over Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle in Tuesday’s election. Pacquiao points out that Reid was “behind 4% in the polls before I got out there” and started campaigning for him.

Pacquiao is also crediting himself for helping Jerry Brown get elected as governor of California. Meanwhile, legendary trainer Freddie Roach is angry that Pacquiao took time off training before next week’s fight against Antonio Margarito in Dallas.

CLOTTEY BLAMES LOSS TO PACQUIAO ON DIARRHEA

March 16, 2010

JOSHUA CLOTTEY

As the boxing blog Queensberry Rules pointed out, “this is how to go from disappointing to a joke.”

Joshua Clottey is blaming his terrible showing against Manny Pacquiao Saturday on diarrhea. Clottey says he was afflicted with the condition after eating some bad Banku and Okra stew.

NO SURPRISE AS PACQUIAO PUMMELS CLOTTEY

March 14, 2010

There was not much drama in Manny Pacquiao’s dominant unanimous decision victory over Joshua Clottey Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. More than 50,000 boxing fans were on hand to witness Pacquiao’s lopsided win.

Veteran boxing writer Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports had Pacquiao shutting Clottey out. On the official judges cards, one had a 120-108 shutout. The other two judges scored it 119-109 (11 rounds for Pacquiao, one for Clottey.) CompuBox had Pacquiao landing 246 blows to Clottey’s 108. Pacquiao also threw more than three times as many punches.

Pacquiao made $12.5 million in this fight without Floyd Mayweather Jr. who pulled out of a proposed megafight. However, there are rumors that Pacquiao may be retiring at the top of his pound-for-pound game. Several reports have Pacquiao quitting the ring to run for Congress in hiis native Philippines.

CHICKEN DE LA MAYWEATHER

March 9, 2010

Boxer Manny Pacquiao this week told Yahoo! Sports what detractors of  Floyd Mayweather Jr. have long suspected. Pacquiao says Mayweather pulled out of their proposed megafight simply because Pretty Boy was afraid to fight him. Pacquiao insists the drug testing “controversy” over their fight was “bulls**t” and manufactured by Mayweather as a means of getting out of it.

IS MANNY PACQUIAO RETIRING?

MANNY PACQUIAO

Freddie Roach dropped a bombshell yesterday. The trainer for boxer Manny Pacquiao hinted that this weekend’s fight against Joshua Clottey may be last of the Filipino superstar’s career.

Pacquiao is once again running for political office in the Philippines. In his comments to the L.A. Times, Roach speculated that if Pacquiao was elected to the Filipino congress, THAT would be a full time job.

The 31-year-old Pacquiao is at the zenith of his professional boxing career. He is coming off wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao has not lost a fight since 2004.

THERE WON’T BE BLOOD: PACQUIAO/MAYWEATHER SUPERFIGHT MAY BE OFF

December 23, 2009

MANNY PACQUIAO: ON STEROIDS?

 TEAM MAYWEATHER: ON DRUGS?

The Mayweather camp is saying Manny Pacquiao is on steroids.

The Pacquiao camp is saying Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a coward.

Who knows? They may both be right. What IS known is that the proposed March Pacquiao/Mayweather megafight is in jeopardy. Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports broke the story that Mayweather’s management team made a last minute demand for drug testing Pacquiao. They want Pacquiao to submit to Olympic style drug testing which would includes blood drawing.

As Iole points out, there have never been any questions or suspicion of Manny Pacquiao using performance enhancing drugs during his career. He has passed every drug test ever administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Then, recently, Mayweather’s father floated the rumor that Pacquiao might be using steroids or other PED’s. Now, based solely on the allegations that they themselves started, the Mayweather camp is demanding the harshest drug testing ever administered to a boxer.

The Filipino boxer’s camp hit the roof. They say that Pacquiao will submit to any type of drug testing Mayweather wants, but only after the fight. Trainer Freddie Roach has said he will refuse to let blood be drawn from Pacquiao within 48 hours before the  fight. Promoter Bob Arum is accusing Mayweather of trying to bail out on the fight because he’s afraid of Pacquiao. Arum should know. As Mayweather’s former promoter he spent the better part of a decade ducking top flight competition for his fighter. According to the Iole article, Arum says,

“…the demand is “absolutely crazy,” done simply to harass Pacquiao, who is squeamish about needles, and is proof that Mayweather doesn’t really want the fight.”

In any event, the drug testing issue may be a dealbreaker. Arum told a Grand Rapids newspaper that the fight “is off.” The AP was also reporting that the fight is likely off. That led a sputtering Arum to call the LA Times with a denial saying the fight might still be on.
