COUTURE LOSS HIGHLIGHTS UFC 102

August 30, 2009

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Randy Couture battle at UFC 102.

NOGUEIRA  OUTLASTS RANDY COUTURE AT UFC 102

Randy Couture lost but he sure didn’t look like a 46-year-old at UFC 102 Saturday. Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Norueira fought to a decision. A decision that was awarded to Nogueira despite hometown judges in Portland that may have been looking to give Couture a victory. Despite Couture’s being knocked down a couple of times, some are already dubbing the Couture/Nogueira match a “classic.” Two of the judges had Nogueira eeking out a 29-28 victory although the fight ended up being a unanimous decision. Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports points out that Couture went “toe-to-toe” with Nogueira.

In other action Saturday, Nate Marquardt and Brandon Vera were both winners on the UFC 102 card. Also, Jake Rosholt choked out Chris Leben for the upset win. Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine suffered a disappointing knockout against Thiago Silva in the evening’s co-main event.

UFC 102 took place in Portland, Oregon. Oregon is the state that Randy Couture resided in for 13 years.

Former UFC champion Randy Couture has always been popular with the fans. What’s amazing is he is still a competitive fighter at 46-years-old. Couture takes on heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Saturday night in Portland, Oregon at UFC 102. Couture is a former Oregon resident.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports describes Couture as “ageless.” The Couture/Noguiera match highlights another deep UFC lineup. Other fights at UFC 102 include Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine taking on Thiago Silva and veteran Nate Marquardt battling undefeated Demian Maia. The winner of the Marquardt/Maia bout is rumored to be in line for a middleweight title match against Anderson Silva in 2010 following Dan Henderson’s shot at the belt.

Chris Leben, Brandon Vera and former heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga are also on the UFC 102 card.

NATASHA WICKS: NEW UFC RING GIRL

There is a new ring girl debuting at UFC 101 in Philadelphia. Natasha Wicks replaces Edith Labelle. Labelle was reportedly dumped by the Ultimate Fighting Championship for being too hung over to work UFC 100 after a night of partying in Las Vegas.

Wicks was the winner of the Maxim magazine Octagon Girl contest.

Fighters Only originally broke the story of Labelle’s drunkeness.

THE UFC IS MORE POPULAR THAN BOXING – IN PHILLY

August 7, 2009

MUCH LIKE THE ROCKY BALBOA STATUE, BOXING HAS BEEN DISPLACED IN PHILADELPHIA

How popular is UFC?

So popular that the Wall Street Journal points out that the first ever Ultimate Fighting event in Philadelphia will have a higher gross than any boxing card in the history of the city.

Think about that. Philadelphia likes to bill itself as “The Boxing Capital of the World.” It’s Joe Frazier’s hometown. A Jack Dempsey/Gene Tunney fight once drew a crowd of 120,000 people there. Even the fictional Rocky Balboa/Apollo Creed fight was held in Philly. Hell, the freakin’ Rocky Balboa statue was displayed there.

Yet, the ONE event that UFC has ever held in Philadelphia will outgross every boxing match ever held in the history of the city. In fact, tomorrow’s UFC 101 will do a higher gate than any boxing card in the entire history of the state of Pennsylvania. Those figures come from the Wall Street Journal (who knows a little something about business.)

FORREST GRIFFIN: TAKES ON ANDERSON SILVA IN UFC 101

As for the UFC 101 card itself, Saturday’s event features BJ Penn taking on Kenny Florian to defend his lightweight title. Middleweight champion Anderson Silva will also fight. He is moving up to 205  pounds to take on Forrset Griffin.
